You Don't Own Me! Grace and Leslie Gore

Almost 70 years ago to the day, Lesley Sue Goldstein was born in the New York City borough of Brooklyn. When she was just a junior in High School, using the stage name of Leslie Gore, she reached the top spot of the music charts with her first song, "It's My Party." After a few more hits, Leslie Gore was offered a proto-femenist song called, "You Don't Own Me." Leslie recorded the song when she was 17. In February 1964, the song shot to the top of the pops, stalling at number 2, being blocked from the #1 spot by The Beatles song, "I Wanna Hold Your Hand."
"Don't tell me what to do! Don't tell me what to say! And please, when I go out with you, don't put me on display!"
"'Cause you don't own me; don't try to change me in any way! You don't own me; don't tie me down 'cause I'd never stay!"
"I'm young, and I love to be young; I'm free and I love to be free! To live my life the way that I want; to say and do whatever I please!"
The music is in 3/4 time, a waltz basically. Instrumentation is strings with bass and drums, with lots of reverb. Leslie Gore's vocals float above the music. She has a wistful singing style in parts of this song, but she sounds strong, determined and self confident in other parts.
The producer of this record was none other than the well known music man, Quincy Jones! Quincy Jones is known for having worked with many famous musical names, from Frank Sinatra to Michael Jackson. Quincy Jones must have had this song in his mind for many many years, because last year, he worked with another young female singer to remake it! But first, here is the original song, You Don't Own Me, by Leslie Gore.
If you were not familiar with the original version, having only heard the new remake that is out today, you may be surprised to hear how closely the remake tracks the original. One possible reason for that is... Both songs were recorded and produced under the musical supervision of Quincy Jones! Leslie Gore passed away last year, and when Quincy Jones heard Australian singer Grace's voice, he felt that she should record a new version of "You Don't Own Me" as a tribute to Leslie Gore.
Grace Sewell is a young Australian singer who grew up listening to music from the 1960s. In 2015, at the age of 17, she began to record tracks with Quincy Jones. One was this remake of "You Don't Own Me," and it was released in March and the video came out in June. The song immediately shot to the top of the Australian charts. But it only began to hit in America after Grace began to promote her upcoming EP in early 2016, including an appearance in January 2016 on Live with Kelly and Michael, where she sang You Don't Own Me, almost identical to the original, without the rap parts in the radio version.
Currently, the official video for the Grace cover of You Don't Own Me has 30 MILLION views! The song is in the top 30 on the American charts, surely destined to become a major hit, and a great debut for Grace! Here now, is the new cover of You Don't Own Me, originally by Leslie Gore, now by Grace, featuring G-Eazy.

Emma writes about La Blogothéque

Emma is a recent college graduate from California who writes her own songs, sings and plays guitar. Check out the excellent music and ASL videos on her YouTube channel! In Emma's own words, "I am a spiritual person and I love music, listening to it, creating it, and everything about it." Her love of music is obvious in her videos!
Please use this link to see a list of ALL guest blog posts by Emma Samuelson.
Today, Emma tells us about 3 “field work music videos” -- music videos from La Blogothéque filmed in cafes, on streets and in apartments. Sounds interesting so let's get started!
La Blogothéque
Of all the different musical endeavors in blogging, La Blogothéque is truly a unique collective of bringing new ways of consuming music to the world. Beginning in 2003, bloggers came together to produce music out of the typical context of live shows and making albums… instead they created an online project that gives both musicians and audience members a brand new experience. La Blogothéque’s main director, Vincent Moon, guides this group in filming “field work music videos”, entitled Take Away Shows, with various artists in scenes such as cafés, historical venues, city streets and apartments. They have shot over two hundred music videos featuring artists like Fleet Foxes, Local Natives, Father John Misty, Leon Bridges, Arcade Fire, Phoenix and Beirut. By taking these musicians into various contexts of daily life, the music gains a element of purity in sound. The quality delivered in every short film is incredible, without dubbing songs over or imputing any technical corrections, the music is pure in sound and delivery. With France as the main background for these epic music videos, anyone would enjoy the experience La Blogothéque has to offer.
One of my favorite Take Away Shows features Jack White at Château de Fontainebleau in France back in 2014. He, along with other talented musicians, performed “The Same Boy You’ve Always Known” and “Entitlement”, each in different parts of the palace. In comparison to his live shows which deliver a bold, classic rock, bring the house down kind of style, these performances are acoustic, quaint and quite moving.
Another memorable performance was done back in 2008 when La Blogothéque followed Bon Iver around Montmarte, Paris, France. Singing “For Emma, Forever Ago”, Bon Iver first sings the piece a cappella in a building lobby with a group of people standing witness to the gorgeous harmony. Next, the cameras follow Bon Iver as they slowly wander the neighborhood, as a group of tourists ahead continue on their walk, now with a soundtrack to their sight seeing. It truly is a remarkable short film well worth the time.
Lastly, I’d like to share with you all a beautiful masterpiece of Spanish guitar performed by the duo Rodrigo y Gabriela. To give you a little taste into the magical world of their music, Rodrigo y Gabriela are two guitarists from Mexico City that get their influence from neuvo flamenco, rock and heavy metal. Without lyrics, their music transports listeners into a space of incredible sounds produced from just two guitars. Combining instrumental rock and flamenco rumba, Rodrigo y Gabriela always put on a stellar performance. In this piece done by La Blogothéque, the duo sit outside a somewhat crowded café and perform “The Soundmaker”, as bystanders witness the magic.
These Take Away Shows, I believe, truly have a deep meaning in the world of music. La Blogothéque uses a unique approach of capturing artists in their element, as well as in a beautiful, intriguing, familiar place. Consuming music through this platform has the potential to impact listeners in a positive, uplifting and calming way. I encourage enjoying more of what La Blogothéque has to offer, and it will fill your ears with joy.

Lado Sichinava and Profusion

Read more reviews by Anna! Check out her recent post about The Hunger Games!
Lado Sichinava and Profusion
Today, I would like to introduce you to a young, talented Georgian musician, living in Italy, Lado Sichinava. Lado is the drummer, composer, producer and co-founder of the rapidly thriving underground band: Profusion. Their Winter Album is about to be released at the beginning of 2015. We discovered interesting facts about him, the band's history and the role of Georgian folklore in their music.
In their Youtube Miniseries (their most recent upload) we follow the recording of their new album and get to peek behind the scenes and get to know the artists behind the band a little bit.
"Profusion is a merge of a multitude of genres, timbres and rhythms, an organic fusion", Lado explains. "Profusion is a bouquet. It can be a bouquet of everything. People think that we play progressive Rock and Fusion. Doesn't Fusion mean bouquet? Profusion of Flowers. In my opinion, this definition is more correct (…) we are a musical bouquet, a cultural bouquet."
Before they morphed into Profusion, for about a year they were called the Mardi Gras Experience. Since they formed exactly during this festival. "There were three of us, a Mexican, a Sicilian and a Georgian. Marco Pieri on the bass, Gionathan (Caradonna) was and still is the pianist and Lado the drummer. Nowadays, they are a quintet. This video was uploaded to Lado's personal channel and shows the band in concert; The Tower (1 and 2) are tracks from their second album Rewotower.
BONUS VIDEO! APPLE PARODY by PROFUSION
So what sparked Lado's love for music? "Everything began, when I was little, I was shouting and screaming. He'll be an opera singer, people said. I was singing all the time at school. They were preparing a group of kids for an opera of Gia Kancheli." "Here, take Lado, on the contrary he will help us, there will be a little peace." They took me and I was in this choir.
The Spaniard Andres Segoviam sparked Lados wish to play the guitar. He studied it at the 'Academy of the Gifted' for three years until he came across the Black Album of Metallica for the first time. And that was it, everything turned around. "I would like to continue with a different instrument and that is the drum." To continue studying, Lado moved to Italy as he had relatives there.
To say it in his words, his first home country is Georgia, the second Italy. There will be a time when I'll definitely return to Georgia. I don't know where I'll live but I know where I want to die. Profusion just finished working on their Winter Album after One Piece Puzzle, (2006) and RewoTower, (2011) which is to be released this winter.
Regarding Georgian folklore in their music: "It's my fault. Fault, in a good sense, because I think that the present, the child of past is the parent of the future. Georgian rhythm is a very progressive style of music. One can say that Georgian 'folk' is the base of progressive understanding. We can create a very interesting 'mix' out of Georgian music." According to Lado, Germans have their classical music which they can take a lot from. He thinks that the music of Zakaria Paliashvili is very interesting to look at under this aspect. It's not just Georgian classic folk but the foundation of progressive rock; this is exactly why we used Zakaria Paliashvili's moments in our composition Chuta Chani.
Profusion toured around Italy and France in 2013. We wish them best of luck with their music and many invites to Rock Festivals all over the world.

Lorde One Direction God Only Knows BBC Music
Earlier as I watched "World News Tonight with David Muir" on ABC (which is doing well in ratings), I was happy to see that a large group of Musicians came together to launch the BBC Music website. This group is doing a cover of the 1960s Beach Boys hit, God Only Knows, from their later output in 1966 on their Pet Sounds album which may have inspired The Beatles to create their Sgt Pepper's album. It's nice to see new artists like Pharrell, Lorde and One Direction in the same video as old timers like Brian Wilson from The Beach Boys (and writer of God Only Knows), Brian May from Queen, Elton John and Stevie Wonder. Here's a complete list of everyone in the video, from the BBC Impossible Orchestra page:
1. Dave Grohl / 2. Alison Balsom / 3. Lorde / 4. Pharrell Williams / 5. Zane Lowe / 6. Sam Smith / 7. Paloma Faith / 8. Eliza Carthy / 9. Nicola Benedetti / 10. Chris Martin / 11. Jaz Dhami / 12. Martin James Bartlett / 13. Danielle de Niese / 14. Stevie Wonder / 15. Florence Welch / 16. Lauren Laverne / 17. Brian Wilson / 18. Jake Bugg / 19. Katie Derham / 20. Gareth Malone / 21. Kylie Minogue / 22. Chrissie Hynde / 23. One Direction / 24. Emeli Sandé / 25. Elton John / 26. Baaba Maal / 27. Ethan Johns / 28. Jools Holland / 29. Jamie Cullum / 30. Brian May / 31. Tees Valley Youth Choir / 32. BBC Concert Orchestra
How many of these artists do you know? How many are among your favorites? I'll admit to only knowing Dave Grohl, Lorde, Pharrell Williams, Stevie Wonder, Brian Wilson, Kylie Minogue, Chrissie Hynde, One Direction, Elton John, Jools Holland and Brian May. Watch and see how many you can identify!

Meghan Trainor - All About That Bass
Could this be the big summer song of 2014? I can't think of another huge hit this summer, other than "Shake It Off" by Taylor Swift which I wrote about recently. It's very late in the summer, but Meghan Trainor is hitting BIG right now with her catchy throwback pop tune, "All About That Bass". Take Amy Winehouse's hit "Rehab", add some Robin Thicke "Blurred Lines" and a dash of Betty Everett's "Shoop Shoop Song" and stir in a healthy helping of Ringo Starr's "No-No Song" and you have a musical brew that could produce That Bass if shaken And stirred.
Aside from the musical nod to 60s girl groups, "All About That Bass" has a slight edge in the vein of Nicki Minaj's Anaconda which itself references "Baby Got Back". It's been one year since Miley Cyrus twerked at the MTV Video Music Awards, but apparently people are still obsessed with butts. Meghan Trainor is seemingly within a normal healthy weight range but she is not a size two and is fine with that. While standing up for girls and women who some might consider plus sized, she describes the advantages of having a bigger booty. However, she does mention "Skinny bitches" and perhaps thin people are equally capable of realizing their advantages and being happy with that. Whatever body size you are genetically predisposed to, it might be good to strive to be happy with yourself.
Ultimately, perhaps it is wise to consider that maybe Perfection Does Not Exist and rather than compare oneself to a perceived societal norm, energy is better spent on becoming comfortable in one's own skin and trying to be the best one can be - physically, mentally and spiritually. One way to be happy with your body is to move it! Why not get up and dance along to this video! The beat is there and you can copy some of the moves as you watch. After all, this is a summer hit, and summer is all about having fun, so stay calm and keep on dancing!

Lyn Price Reviews 60s Rock Videos
Today we welcome a NEW guest blogger, Lyn Price. Lyn is a talented singer who is joining us to review Music Videos from the 1960s! Read what Lyn says about two Garage Rock videos and a huge Psychedelic Pop hit by rock stars Tommy James and the Shondells.
Groovy Sixties Tunes!
The Monocles
"I Can't Win"
In Los Angeles, 1967, a songwriter named Jim Newby wrote a classic garage hit - "I Can't Win"
This track stood out among others because it contained all the makings of a great Garage song. In a record shop, in the front row, you could see the song "I Can't Win". Once you hear this song, you want to hear it again and again.
"I Can't Win" is still a winner. One reason may be that elements of Garage Rock are flying high at high speed. This track delivers - Garage at it's best with Surf, Rockabilly, Psychedelic and Exotica. The music flows - makes the listener want to dance.
The Illusion
"Did You See Her Eyes"
In 1969, a band from Hempstead, Long Island, New York got hold of a smoking hot Garage song entitled "Did You See Her Eyes". The song, filled with exquisite drum rolls, earth shaking harmonies and psychedelic heaven, made it to 32 on the Top Forty.
The video, put together by Music Mike, has not lost anything, even a moment of the excitement that this track generates. Illusion are a fantastically good Garage band and this video, with music and pictures, put Illusion on the map.
The video is psychedelic, with colors flowing and images dancing. This song did put Illusion on the map. And it's still there, ready to pick up and move forward.
Do not miss out on listening to this track. It moves.
TOMMY JAMES AND THE SHONDELLS
"Crimson & Clover"
“Hanky Panky,” “Mony Mony,” “I Think We’re Alone Now,” “Crimson and Clover,” “Crystal Blue Persuasion,” “Draggin’ The Line”... The music of Tommy James is heard continuously, everyday, in every country in the world: on radio, television or a film soundtrack. To date, he's sold over 100 million records and has been awarded 23 gold singles plus nine gold and platinum albums.
Born in Dayton, Ohio and raised in Michigan, Tommy James was modelling at age 4. He formed his first band early on - and recorded "Hanky Panky". Although it achieved success on a local level, it didn't move the way it should have but, several years later, the song was found in a record bin by a D.J. Then the crowds began to request the song again and again.
This song, "Crimson and Clover" is sung with a lot of feeling and was immensely popular. The same goes for all his songs, and "Hanky Panky" is such a good dance record that it's not surprising the crowd responded well to the D.J.'s decision to push it. The response to "Crimson and Clover" was something close to magic. Tommy James, born Tommy Jackson, has been putting music out there for a very long time. Let's give him and the Shondells a large round of applause !
Tommy James Book: Read his autobiography - Me, The Mob And The Music. We hear it is now in development for a film, quite exciting! Also, go to Tommy's YouTube channel and see the first show - INSIDE TRACKS WITH TOMMY JAMES - some interesting behind the scenes stuff, with a new show coming every 3 weeks.
Here's a very popular podcast interview with Tommy James, from http://GarageRockRadio.com.

The Meaning of Christmas
What is the true meaning of Christmas? Well it depends on what you believe about the reality of the world we live in. If you are a Christian, you believe that God provided a way for people to be forgiven for the sins of Adam and Eve as well as their own sins. That way is by sending one part of the Trinity which is God, the Son part, to live the life of a Man and then die prematurely and painfully, to pay for the sins of everyone who chooses to believe in Him. That man was Jesus Christ and the Church has a special Mass on December 25th to celebrate His birth.
Since God gave this gift to all of us in the form of the life and death of Jesus, Christians at some point decided to give gifts to each other, in remembrance and emulation of God's gift to us. In the course of giving out these gifts, we visit with our families and friends. Even those who are not religious can appreciate the fellowship of sharing a meal and pleasant times with loved ones.
Along with the shopping and gatherings of season comes Christmas music. There are two songs in particular that can provide inspiration in our lives. Read on as I tell you my thoughts on two Christmas favorites - The Little Drummer Boy, and Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer.
People came to where Jesus had just been born with gifts for this newborn "King". One young boy was there and saw what was happening. He wanted to give a gift too, but he was poor and had no money. However, he did have a skill. He was a pretty good drummer!
Now some may say that he was given this skill by God. Some think that God decides if and when to give a mother a child, and has a reason for bringing that child into the world, and has a plan for that child's life. If that is the case, then God put us here for a reason, gave us skills for a reason, and it is good to develop our God given skills and use them in service according to God's will.
Others may think that the drummer boy inherited certain skills from his parents by way of the genetic code he received random parts of, from each parent. But still, the child owes it to society to develop their skills for the good of society, because it was society that allowed that child to get to where he presently finds himself. Human animals need contact and care from other humans, or else they die. We are born helpless and we can do nothing on our own to survive for an initial period of time, and it takes us a long time to be able to live independently. By that time, we owe a large debt to society. Our parents and family members fed, clothed and cared for us. Society provided a framework and system of providing food, clothing and all kinds of goods and services for the people of the world. We make a lot of choices and efforts on our own but we also have a lot of infrastructure in place for us. It is good to contribute to society since we have already received so much from it.
In either interpretation, it seems to me that we have an obligation to develop our skills and use them in celebration of what we have received in this life. The Little Drummer Boy presents the baby Jesus with a performance of the thing he knows how to do, play his drum. What is something you are good at? How will you develop that ability even further? Will you use your skills as a thankful gift to what made you who you are, as the Litte Drummer Boy did?
Sometimes it is not so obvious as to what our skills are. Everyone is unique, no two people are exactly alike. We have a set of characteristics that make us who we are. As we live and interact with others, we come to think of some of our traits as assets and others as detriments. We discover certain things we are able to do that bring pleasure and utility to ourselves and others. But we also find that we have certain characteristics that are perceived by others as a weakness or a strangeness.
As we all know, there seems to be something in human nature that instinctively leads us to judge the fitness of our fellow associates. Perhaps by finding their faults and weaknesses, it helps us to feel relatively superior. Further, we seem to identify who will help us in our lives and who will be a drain on our resources. In nature, we see animals making the decision to sometimes abandon the weakest of their young when resources are scarce, or leave behind a group member who is too old or infirm to be useful to the pack. But humans are different from other animals. We can use our imagination to devise new ways of using our skills and characteristics that might not at first seem obvious. We can think about something that at first seems like a weakness or hindrance and discover the hidden utility of this trait.
In Rudolf, we have a tale that shows how this very concept played out. We can identify, because we see that sometimes we have something that is not generally considered useful or worthy of having. It may be that this skill or attribute is only an advantage in certain rare situations. But when that situation arises, we are glad to have it, and so are all our associates! While they may have once shunned us for being different, they now idolize us for this unique thing which all of a sudden has been shown to be very important! Rudolf used his strangely glowing nose to light the way through the storm. What is your unique talent or characteristic? How will you show others that your difference is something to be celebrated? Will you take a moment to praise someone for something they might not even realize they have, like Santa did for Rudolf?

Gangnam Style YouTube Videos
You've seen it on YouTube, you've seen it on the Evening News, now see it on YouTubeStars! Its time for some Gangnam Style videos! This K-Pop dance song from Korean pop star PSY is approaching 300 Million Views on YouTube. It reminds me of a generic LMFAO song, some kind of cross between Party Rock Anthem and I'm Sexy And I Know It. The video features lots of dancing with plenty of hip swirling and "Ride 'em Cowboy" motions. Random is the key word here; you never know what will appear in the next scene. There is a guy thrusting above a man on the floor in an elevator. There's PSY on the toilet. There's dancing in the streets, as expected, but also party bus action.
Here's the official Gangnam Style video, bt PSY. Watch it and learn the dance. You'll be a hit at the next wedding you attend. :P
A video like this was bound to spawn a thousand variations and parodies. There is this Western parody, where they are ready to whip some ass, Gangnam Style. There are several girls in bikinis dancing on the beach which probably accounts for more of the 3 Million views than the cheesy fight scenes. Erica Law is the girl in the white bikini.
Of course there is a sped up version of the Gangnam Style song! There always is. Someone, or typically several someones, do a chipmuck version of pop songs. This one is pretty cool, and the song actually rocks harder at a faster tempo. The dance moves are there from the original, as well as the funnier random scenes. Due to the rev up, the video clocks in under 2 minutes, which may be fine for those tired of the tune already! Pretty girls and goofy situations make for a nice parody with nearly a million views.
What are people saying about this video? Like any pop tune, the reaction is all over the place. Love, hate, amusement, SMH, and W/E. The Fine Brothers make a series of "Teens React" videos. Here is their take on Gangnam Style. This cross section of teens watch the video then answer questions posed to them by the behind-the-scenes narrator. Rapid but interesting analysis from the target demographic. Watch and see which people in this video you agree with.

It's Friday! Rebecca Black and ARK Music Factory

We now know a bit more about Rebecca, the song, and the company that produced it. Rebecca is 13 and goes to a charter middle school in Orange County CA which provides "technological skills, fine arts and health exploration and multi-cultural awareness." She played the lead role in her school play, "Oklahoma." She contacted ARK Music Factory, which offered her a choice of two songs they had written, and she chose Friday to record and make into a music video.

If you can understand that this is a children's song, written by a very new production company, and sung by an 8th grader - then you may be able to appreciate it for what it is. Rebecca Black, and ARK, are just starting out, let's see where they go! Rebecca has already been a Trending Topic on Twitter all week, had millions of views of her video and been on Good Morning America - thats a pretty good start!
There are some nice people at ARK's website, as well as a fair share of trolls that come into the chat room and act outrageously for attention. The ARK site is powered by the Ning Social Networking engine and has the ability to post pictures, music, and video, and there are blogs, forums and a chat room. You can Friend people and message them, just the same as any other social site.
We spent some time in the chat room this week, using our Ning "TJ" account name and met some enthusiastic musicians at all levels of development of their musical skills. There was a wide range of opinions exressed in the chat room about RB, Friday, ARK, and the other ARK musicians. Just like the video, people seemed to either love or hate the song, the video and ARK. Most were able to act civilly and provide their opinion respectfully.
Here now are a bunch of YouTube videos from some of the people who visited ARK this week and put a link to one of their YouTube videos in the chat.
Here are many more links of musicians who were at ARK this week, talking about their music. Click a few and have a listen to them!

Here is another YouTubeStars interview with a talented and interesting YouTuber. This time, we have interviewed singer Krista Nicole, who has been uploading excellent music videos to YouTube since she was just 12 years old! Krista's YouTube channel is KristaHeartzuz which has over 40 great music videos including her most watched video "Love The Way You Lie - Krista Nicole Acoustic Cover feat. Mars Raps - Eminem ft. Rihanna". Krista makes most of her music videos with her dad accompanying her on guitar. It's great to see father / daughter teams working together to make music!
Krista's newest release is a 4 song EP CD called Dreams which you can download from iTunes, or you can download it or buy the CD from her Store, OR you can
WIN an AUTOGRAPHED COPY of the CD if you enter our contest - CONTEST Rules are below the Interview.
Now, our interview with Krista Nicole!

Well my name is Krista Nicole Hudson, I'm 16 and a junior in high school. I'm involved in the theatre program at my high school and I love being in the fall musicals. I love acting as well as singing. I also really enjoy children's theatre because you get to be as dramatic, crazy and goofy as you want and the kids love it no matter what!
How long have you been singing, playing and writing music?
I've been singing for as long as I can remember. I was always around music. The first song I ever wrote was with my cousin, I was 5 and she was about 8. The song was called "Bubblegum Factory" and I still remember it exactly. I've (hopefully) come a long way in my writing since then, but I'd still really like to learn more about writing songs and I want to write a lot more.
Who are some of your favorite Musicians, both on and off YouTube?
Well OF COURSE Tyler Ward, Julia Sheer, Eppic and Jeff Hendrick. I love how they make all of the songs they cover their own. I also really like BoyceAvenue. John Mayer is a really talented artist and I love his voice and music as well.
How did you get started on YouTube?
I posted my first video when I was 12 years old. I didn't expect anyone to watch them except for some family and maybe some friends. But when I started to get comments it was interesting and exciting to see what people (that I don't even know) had to say! It quickly turned into a hobby of mine to record and post videos! Unfortunately when I started to get more views and more noticed, YouTube found that I was (by that time) only 12, just a couple weeks before my 13th birthday which was the age you had to be to have a YouTube account. [YouTubeStars: YouTube shut down Krista's original channel but she was soon back with her current channel!] I had a lot of subscribers who made "support Krista Nicole" videos and I gained back a lot of my subscribers when I started my new account. I was so thankful!
What do you think is the best video you have made so far?
My favorite video so far is probably the cover I did with Eppic and Jeff Hendrick of Just A Dream by Nelly. They're so talented, and I love that I got to do that collaboration with both of them!
Your dad is often seen playing guitar in your videos. How do you like making music with him?
I love that music is a common interest for me and my dad, and I feel really lucky to have him be so supportive of me. Although sometimes recording with him can be a pain! We can get a little frustrated with each other, but I wouldn't change it for anything.
How did you come to work with Tyler Ward? How was that experience?
I was going to do a cover of the song Two Is Better Than One with another talented YouTuber, Derek Cate. Unfortunately things didn't work out with finishing the song, but I still wanted to do a collab with a talented male! My dad came across Tyler Ward on YouTube and asked me if I'd be interested in messaging him and asking if he'd do the song with me. I figured it was a long shot but decided to let him ask anyway. Sure enough he replied and was totally willing to do it. Turns out he's one of the nicest and funniest guys I have ever met! I ended up being really lucky to be able to work with him. He produced my first EP Dreams which I'm really happy with, and I really hope to work with him again in the future.
How do you feel about "haters" on YouTube who leave rude comments?
I try to just ignore the comments from people who just want to be mean. I've read some comments that have really hurt my feelings, but I always remember how many more positive, helpful comments there are, and in comparison, the mean ones shouldn't even matter.
What else do you like to do in your free time, besides music and making videos?
Like any other teenager I just really enjoy hanging out with my friends, surfing the web, going on walks, and also being involved in community theatre and the high school plays/musicals.
How do you feel about fans making YouTube channels about you, like http://www.youtube.com/user/HeartzuzFans? Do you mind having your old videos on these channels?
It's so flattering to have pages dedicated towards me! I really love that. But I honestly try and avoid the old videos of myself that are posted. I'm even a little surprised that I posted some of the videos that I did! I notice every flat and sharp note, every crack, every mistake in my voice. But I guess I have to remember you are your own worst critic. But I also can't stand to see myself from back then. Everyone has gone through an awkward stage, and I think mine lasted for a couple years! Sometimes I wish people didn't have to see me like that. Ha ha!
It's been 14 years, are you ever going to do another cover video of you singing "Louie Louie"? We LOVED the first one you did! (reference to the very cute video: The life of Krista Nicole)
There's no reenacting that; it's a classic.
What projects are you working on right now? Any live shows coming up?
Lately I've been doing a lot of musical theatre. I just finished with my high school's production of Fiddler On The Roof playing the part of Hodel and this month I plan on auditioning for the role of Wendy in Peter Pan. I also signed up to be in the next play at my school, Almost Maine. I love being on stage as a character and singing, it's so much fun. Unfortunately there are no live shows of me doing any cover songs, or originals, but hopefully soon I will be able to arrange a show somewhere.
What are your plans for the future?
I plan on starting some piano lessons and maybe once I get the gist of that I can also pick up guitar. We'll see how things go. I'm looking forward to growing and expanding my music knowledge. After high school I plan to continue doing community theatre and my music, study business music and theatre at a community college, and after that move down to southern California to go to beauty school and continue making music and just see where life takes me.
Could you please provide links to your websites and let us know how often you update each one?
I usually post something on facebook and twitter every couple days. Just updated my website a couple days ago but it had been a while since it was changed.

Banned Music Videos - Sex and Nudity
This post is for parents, to show them what is available on YouTube. If you are a child, please click here to read an article I wrote about iCarly.
I just read an article at LookingForClues, a website I sometimes write for (my articles - here). The name of the article is "Banned Sex Music Videos on YouTube - Is There Too Much Sex In Music Videos?" I decided to do some research and see if these music videos that the article says show sex and nudity are actually on YouTube. I did find the videos on YouTube and some do show nude girls.
If you are a parent, you should know that these kinds of videos are on YouTube. You can watch them yourself and then decide if you want your children to see them. The article says that this kind of thing could be harmful to the young. They may "think that they must achieve physical perfection, and an obsession with body image can lead to unnecessary dieting." I tend to agree.
Here are some music videos that are mentioned in the article. Beware - there is some nudity in some of these videos.
Sex on YouTube - A Parent's Guide
Sex and Porn on YouTube
Sex and Nudity in Videos
Chat Roulette - NOT for Kids!
Wicked Game - Chris Isaak
This video was never banned and the author of the article mentions it as an example of how to be subtle when depicting sexual themes in a music video.
Girls on Film - Duran Duran
This is the "night" version which was banned in several countries and/or only shown at night.
Eric Prydz - Call On Me
Some will call this overly suggestive as it features lots of thrusting hips!
There were a few other videos mentioned in the article "Banned Sex Music Videos on YouTube - Is There Too Much Sex In Music Videos?" Some are Embedding disabled by request and others are too much like porn for my taste, so I won't be showing them here! If you are over 18, you can decide for yourself what you want to spend time watching. If you have young children, you might want to do some research to find out what is shown in some YouTube videos.

Take A Bow by Rihanna
One of the most popular things to do on YouTube is to make a video of yourself singing a popular song. Many YouTubers have covered Rihanna's song, "Take A Bow." I picked out 6 videos of women singing this popular song. Here they are, with no comment from me. They are all great!!! Watch and enjoy!

More 1960s Music Videos
This post adds to four videos I discussed in the 1960s Music Videos post. This time, I'll list some Garage Rock videos I found on YouTube. If you like this kind of music, check out some Garage podcasts on this blog and some MP3s here. There is a longer list of YouTube Garage videos at this blog post.
Leaves - Hey Joe
This is not the Jimi Hendrix version. It's the uptempo 60's Garage Rock version by The Leaves, from California.
Black Diamonds - I Want, Need, Love You
This fuzzpunk Garager is from an Australain band.
T h i r t e e n t h F l o o r E l e v a t o r s
Roky and the boys from Texas sing their one hit, "You're Gonna Miss Me" on Dick Clark's American Bandstand. From the record titled "The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators."
M A X F R O S T A N D THE TROOPERS - Shape Of Things To Come
From the movie "Wild in the Streets." Change the voting age to 14 and elect the first "wigged-out" president. Then stick anyone over 30 in LSD camps. Interesting movie with a great soundtrack.
The Honeybees - You Need Us
Here's a fun one from Gilligan's Island! Ginger, Mary Anne and Mrs. Howell form The Honeybees and perform their smash hit, "You Need Us."

Cinema du jour 19 - Singers with Guitars
This is part 19 in our continuing series, Cinema du jour, the movie of the day. Home made music videos have always been popular on YouTube. The first huge success in this genre came with Terra Naomi's great song, "Say It's Possible". Recently, Miaarose has become an overnight sensation. In this post, we'll watch four music videos from four different YouTubers who play their guitars and sing their own songs.
Before we get to the videos, I want to invite you to read about the YouTubeMall project. This will be a free service that allows all videomakers to create Stores to advertise what they have for sale. Many videomakers have PayPal Donate buttons, or CafePress Stores, or sell CDs or paintings. You will be able to advertise all of this, and more! The idea is to have one central place for all videomakers to list their projects/items for sale. But what if you don't have anything to sell? We'll have that covered too! You will be able to be paid for viewing rights to exclusive videos that you post to the site. There will me more on this in the coming weeks...
Is This Love?
Creativefisher is one of my favorite YouTube singer/songwriters. She has a captivating voice that she uses to bring her moving lyrics to life. But Char is much more than an aspiring musician. She is a talented artist, and this aspect of her personality adds depth and emotional texture to her videos. Watch this one, which was featured by YouTube, but be sure to also check out the four new videos she uploaded last week!
If you can't see the video above, watch it on YouTube.
Leave me alone by Jesse Stutsman
Here's a cool music video from stealurface1976. Jesse is a Canadian man who plays acoustic guitar and sings to original songs and covers. He has done classic rock covers from Tull to Tucker and even The Beatles. In this video, we'll hear Jesse sing an indie inspired original rocker that really caught my attention. I think it's a great song!
If you can't see the video above, watch it on YouTube.
KRIS SHRED - I'm Broken V2 (Original)
The last time I wrote about KrisShred, it was for his "Insane Nonsense Song" which was later "covered" by lipsyncer extraordinaire, celestialsam. That song is still stuck in my head! But Kris has done many other music videos, including a powerful cover of The Doors "Crystal Ship" 60s classic. Today, we'll watch him sing an original song that I recently discovered and loved! Ignore the headphone clamped to his head which he used as a mic (lol!), and enjoy this rocker!
If you can't see the video above, watch it on YouTube.
Angels (song)
Periurban is one of the most popular singer/songwriters on YouTube. He has made over 150 videos and has over 3000 subscribers. Peri, a Scottsman, was the winner of Renetto's "How to become popular overnight" contest. That might have helped him get some viewers, but I think they would have found this talented and personable man in time, even without this publicity. You can watch Peri sing and discuss videomaking on YouTube or at LiveVideo. Here's a song he did in December. Click on the description to read the excellent lyrics!
If you can't see the video above, watch it on YouTube.
Please read our last Cinema du jour, number 18 - it's here! That post mentions Renetto, Kratzlaff, iChannel and KwaiChi.
