KwaiChi Interview
Popular YouTube Star KwaiChi (see his Emoticons video in this post) was recently interviewed by Robert Colvile, a reporter for the Telegraph, a National UK newspaper. The interview is online, here. KwaiChi made a video about the interview. He was unhappy that the reporter got his hometown wrong and didn't include much of the interview in the final article. I told KwaiChi that I would be glad to publish the entire interview! Let's watch his video, then please read the interview.
My Daily Telegraph Interview published 23rd September 2006

The Unabridged Telegraph Interview
How did you hear about YouTube?
My girlfriend (username Kazzart on youtube) is a very popular online 'traditional' blogger (see http://www.kazzart.com/) and works in the IT industry so I heard about Youtube from her. There are loads of youtube related sites, the best ones are http://www.youtubetalk.com/ and http://www.youtubestars.com/
What made you decide to put videos up on it?
I used to post up a traditional blog on my own website for my fans & friends but I found it difficult to regularly post up entries and my blog often fell out of date. I found that making quick videos was relatively easy and great practice for acting, so I just started posting videos. Since then I never looked back and have exclusively been posting on youtube.
Have you been surprised by the response?
There's certainly more of a community feel about youtube than the normal individual blogs you see on the internet. I was not an instant success like many other people on youtube but I have been surprised by the high number of friends and subscribers I have regularly viewing my videos. I think the turning point for me was when I started using youtube as a means to make people more aware of issues such as racism.
Has it helped your career?
I haven't been offered any lead roles in anything since joining youtube but it has increased my fanbase considerably and I now have a wikipedia page written about me. Recently, established celebrities such as Jason Statham, Paris Hilton and P Diddy have been promoting themselves on youtube so it can't be a bad publicity tool. Other than my career I have had many positives from being on youtube including receiving small monetary donations and gifts. I try my best to help promote other people's careers on youtube, from ethical t-shirt makers to unsigned musicians.
What do you think motivates people who use the site?
I think you have 2 main categories of people on youtube:
1) The voyeur who likes to watch lots of videos, perhaps watching some kittens playing with dogs or watching how someone half way around the world lives.
2) The exhibitionist who wants to be on screen, who has something to say. A lot of people fall in between both of the above categories, myself being one of them.
What's the best thing you've put up, do you think?
On July 17th 2006 I posted up a video that I directed and co wrote with my friend Tim McArdle involving over 20 other youtube members. - The YT Anti-Racism Collaboration: We Can Make a Difference (watch it here) It was the first video by the Youtube Anti Racism Collaboration (YTARC for short) raising awareness of racism and encouraging more members of the youtube community to make a video to show their support against racism (this video has now been shown in some schools and sociology classes). There have been over 80 videos made by other YT members so far in this movement and others can show support by placing YTARC somewhere on their profile pages. A few weeks ago I was offered to debate against an open racist on youtube which I accepted and the debate is currently ongoing. I have since been receiving a great deal of researched support from statisticians, law, psychology and biology students from all over the world.
What's the best thing you've seen there?
Sufficiency by VioletKitty411 (watch it here) shows a video of a woman who was involved in a hit and run accident recovering over a period of 3 years. It is a really heart warming true story which carries a very strong message.
Do you think sites like this enable people like yourself to bypass the standard career routes?
It can do as can be seen with lonelygirl15, a 16 year old american girl with strict religious parents who was recently found to be a new zealander 19 year old actress with no previous training or experience. There are a couple more youtubers like MadV and Brookers but not many more success stories though, I for one am happily sticking with my agent to find me work.
I assume the bio data on your site and Wikipedia is accurate - if there's anything that's not, please let me know.
Scarily my wiki page is accurate!

Urgelt recommends sumrhotsumrnot
Hi folks, Urgelt here. Kenny asked me to write a guest feature for his blog here on YouTubeStars. And it just so happens I have the perfect 'tuber in mind for a feature.
Her name is sumrhotsumrnot. Sumr is a young American woman working in Japan. Exactly what her work is, we don't know. It's a mystery! She's signed a nondisclosure agreement for the duration of her stay, but she's promised to "tell all" when her contract ends. If you watch her videos closely, though, you'll pick up a clue here and there. See if you can guess.
I think I'm Boring
Here's a good introductory video, where she worries she is boring, then performs a funny lip-synch to a song from The Little Mermaid.
If you can't see the video above, watch it on YouTube.
My Japanese Lunchbox
But Sumr is more than just another lip syncher. Her videos also tell the tale of a traveler in a foreign land. You'll see and experience Japan through her eyes. She really shines in her travelogues.
Here, Sumr shows us her lunchbox. It's nothing like a happy meal, that's for sure! See how gorgeous all the food is; it's a hallmark of Japanese culture, even for take-out.
If you can't see the video above, watch it on YouTube.
Tsukiji Fish Market
In this next video, Sumr visits the Tsuiji Fish Market. If you're squeamish, you might want to skip this one.
If you can't see the video above, watch it on YouTube.
I was locked up!
And here, she takes us to a restaurant called "The Lockup." Very strange! Her explanations are hilarious, too.
If you can't see the video above, watch it on YouTube.
Sumr has over 30 videos posted to YouTube. If you've ever been curious about what it's like to be an American tourist in Japan, she'll give you the straight skinny. You'll see incredible stage shows featuring men in drag, a trip to the summit of Mt. Fuji, parties with her friends, and more, all with intelligent and amusing commentary. Her travelogues are interspersed with vlogs that are personal and just as interesting.
She's a person you'd enjoy knowing. So pay her a visit! Tell her Urgelt sent you.

The Arts on YouTube
YouTube is a huge, diverse community. Sometimes, it's good to have a look around various avenues and barrios; venture into sections of the city of YouTubia (There really IS a YouTubia!) where you might not normally travel. You may be new to the Toob. Maybe you have just seen a few vloggers like Geriatric1927 or boh3m3. You may have been drawn in by one of YouTube's talented actresses, like lonelygirl15 (Jessica Rose), littleloca (Stevie Ryan) or LUCYinLA (Laura Segura). However you arrived in this wild and wooly corner of the entertainment world, wander down the boulevard and have a stroll throught The Arts district! Come on, let's go!
I'm All Shook Up
Let's saunter into this lounge - The Blue Jazz Mambo Cafe. On stage, singing something a little different, is ysabellabrave. Maryanne, age 26, usually sings Blues, Jazz and Mambo numbers (watch Mambo Italiano and then see a fan lipsynch to it!) Look at how much fun she is having with this song! Who would have thought Maryanne could pull off such a great cover of an Elvis song? I'll be back in a minute; I'm going out on the dance floor!
If you can't see the video above, watch it on YouTube.
Response to Joyride13 : remix Say It's Possible Cover
Whew! That was fun. =D Let's see what's going on at that club next door. I can hear the music from the sidewalk; I recognize that song! It's the great Terra Naomi tune, "Say It's Possible". As we enter, I can see that it's not Terra singing this time, it's joyride13. This Canadian woman usually sings a cappella, but this time she's accompanied by zeprof. WOW! This is as good as the Terra Naomi remix! Let's listen, and sing along!
If you can't see the video above, watch it on YouTube.
Cambry plays Rachmaninoff Moment Musical No. 4
We're back on the boulevard. There seems to be quite a crowd in that Piano Bar over there and I feel like a cocktail, so let's go in! Whoa, what's this??? This is not your ordinary piano bar, or piano player! It's PianoPlaya123, a.k.a. Cambry, and this 24-year-old guy from Chicago is wow-ing the crowd with a classical number! Apple Pucker Martini with Grey Goose, please. Let's move closer to the piano and see what's going on!
If you can't see the video above, watch it on YouTube.
Sonnet #38, by William Shakespeare
Man, that was amazing! Let's make one more stop before we head home. There's a coffehouse just down the way and there's always something interesting going on inside. Look, tonight it's poetry readings! There's Urgelt up on stage. Hmm, I usually bump into this amiable man over at the Healthy Eating market, where he buys his large bags of Stevia - the healthy and safe sugar substitute. This eve finds him onstage, reciting a Sonnet by the Great Bard, Shakespeare. Let's listen in...
If you can't see the video above, watch it on YouTube.
That reading was great! I could listen to it again and again. But, it's time to go now. I hope you had as much fun as I did!
Thanks to all the great artists on YouTube! A special thanks to Urgelt for letting me use his Shakespeare clip. He usually has "Embedding disabled by request" but was kind enough to allow embedding this time.

The Lonelygirl15 Story
Once upon a time, there was a teenaged girl named Bree who was very lonely. She only had one good friend, a boy named Daniel. Bree was homeschooled and was very smart; she loved to read. Her parents were strict and they kept her away from other kids, sometimes even from Daniel. Bree and her parents were members of some religion which she believed in but was reluctant to talk about.
That is the story that was presented to the world through a series of YouTube videos over the last three months. The lonelygirl15 channel on YouTube has become the most subscribed channel of all-time. Let's go back and have a look at some of the most interesting and entertaining videos in this series.
My Parents Suck...
Lonelygirl15's first hugely successful video was the "My Parents Suck..." video. I started a thread about LG15 and this video in particular, over at YouTubeTalk.com. That thread became large and unwieldy, so the admin broke it up into three pieces, each of which are among the most read threads on the site. Here's what I wrote about this video:
Yesterday was Independence Day in the USA. Many people were spending the day off with their friends and family, grilling meat and trying to beat the heat. Still, there were many people on YouTube and it seemed to me that most of them were looking at one video in particular!
Bree (lonelygirl15), a 16 year old homeschooled girl, made a video called "My Parents Suck...". It hasn't even been up for 2 days and the view count is approaching 200 thousand! To summarize the vid: Bree is sad because her parents prevented her from going on an afternoon hike with a male friend (Daniel) by saying that they would be disappointed in her if she did. A fitting video for "Independence" Day!
The comments for the video became a giant chat room, as everyone who saw the video seemed to have something to say about it. That is not surprising because this video has just about every hot-button issue known to mankind in it! Parents vs children, freedom vs control, dogma vs pragmatism, conservative vs liberalism, power vs powerless, submission vs rebellion, and on and on. Every topic that your college Sociology textbook covers can be found in this video and its resulting comment storm.
There is one dichotomy that you won't find in that Soc. textbook, and that is "real vs fake"! There has been debate as to whether Bree and Daniel are "real" or if they are playing characters. I tend to think in terms of probabilities, and I'd say there's an 80% chance that they are real and 20% fake. We'll just have to wait and see if this is another EmoKid21Ohio/Emogirl21 situation.
If you can't see the video above, watch it at YouTube.
Boy Problems...
Bree is a 16-year-old girl and Daniel is an 18-year-old boy. Are they "just friends" or do they have feelings for each other? What will her parents say when Bree begins to go on dates? In this video, we see that there is something developing between Bree and Daniel.
If you can't see the video above, watch it at YouTube.
A Change In My Life
Bree talks about a religious ceremony that she has been chosen to play a big part in. She still will not say what her religion is, because she says that some people will leave disrespectful comments on her videos (Child alert! There are plenty already). However, there is a website about Bree and Daniel, lonelygirl15.com, which has the word Thelema written in Greek in the lower-righthand corner of the page, and a unicursal hexagram above the i in the blue header picture. Thelema is a "philosophical, mystical and religious system." There is speculation in the YouTube community that the ceremony that Bree speaks of may be a "Crowleymas"; a celebration of the birthday of Aleister Crowley, which is October 12th.

My First Kiss
Bree went to a party with Daniel, and he kissed her! She talks about it in this video, but she is very embarrassed. It was her first kiss. Bree is a study in contrast. On one hand, she seems very innocent and sheltered. On the other hand, she seems to be involved in a religion which has occult practices. Is lonelygirl15 a devil or an angel? Only time will tell!

Lonely girl fake speach
You may have seen coverage of lonelygirl15 on the NBC nightly news or on the Jay Leno show. You may have read about her in the New York Times or the L.A. Times or in this wikipedia article. Why all the media attention lately? Bree and Daniel are actors playing parts in a new form of Alternative Reality Game. Many people had thought that Bree was a "real" girl. Here is the story of one such girl:

YouTubeStars News 9-13-06 Lonelygirl15 is Jessica Rose!
Lonelygirl15 revealed!
Yesterday, the news broke that Lonelygirl15 (Bree) is not a real person. She is a character played by an actress named Jessica Rose. SiliconValleyWatcher found her myspace which had pics, and also a photobucket account. According to her myspace, Jessica is 19, lives in California, is in a relationship, and is straight. The myspace account is now set to private, but a copy of the page from March 2006 was found in the Google cache.

Renetto's contests - results
Popular YouTuber, Renetto, has been conducting two popular contests. He decided to give away 100 webcams to 100 YouTube members who don't have webcams. He asked people to make a video by borrowing a camera or making a slideshow with Windows Movie Maker, telling why they should get a camera. Here is the latest news on this contest.
Renetto also hosted a contest in which he would choose one YouTube member to have their video shown on his account, thereby generating a lot of views for that person. The winner of that contest is PeriUrban and the video he posted on Renetto's page is here. It is of PeriUrban playing his guitar and singing. PeriUrban has a very nice voice!
More YouTube Stars on Riffage
I mentioned in my last news post that Boh3m3 (Ben) and Kimberleigh have joined Jacci (FilthyWhore) in making video reports on Riffage.com and the Riffage YouTube account. Now, Paperlilies (Bryony, see "Geisha Girl") , Tasha (of "hey clip" fame), and Morbeck have also made Riffage report videos. Check them out!

1960s Music Videos
You can find almost anything on YouTube! I've enjoyed watching hundreds of music videos on YouTube and my favorite ones are from the 1960s. Look around YT and you'll find clips from Shindig, Hullabaloo, The Ed Sullivan Show, Where the Action is, Old Grey Whistle Stop, Ready Steady Go! and more. Here's 4 great 60s classics; groovy, baby!
The Beatles - Please Please Me
This clip shows The Beatles performing their first number one hit on the Ed Sullivan show in February of 1964. The band doesn't sound quite the same as they did in the studio recording, but look at the enthusiasm and listen to the girls! If you love The Beatles, there are many more of their videos to see on YouTube!
If you can't see the video above, watch it at YouTube.
Castaways - Liar Liar
After The Beatles were on the Ed Sullivan show, every guy in America wanted to be in a band! "Liar Liar, pants on fire! Your nose is longer than a telephone wire!" Some say this is the best "Garage Rock" song every made. I love it! I've probably watched this clip a hundred times. It's grainy, probably made from a videotape from the TV. Check out the go-go dancer, as we watch this 60s classic by The Castaways (they are still together and playing!), from the movie, "It's a Bikini World":
If you can't see the video above, watch it at YouTube.
The Rolling Stones - Satisfaction
Here are The Rolling Stones singing Satisfaction on Shindig in 1965. Mick Jagger, age 22 at the time, gets a long close-up during the final half-minute of the performance. Check out the boys when they were still young and Brian Jones was still alive:
If you can't see the video above, watch it at YouTube.
Herman's Hermits - Henry The VIII
We're back on the Ed Sullivan show again, watching a teenaged Peter Noone, "Herman" of Herman's Hermits, singing "I'm en-er-y the Eighth, I em, en-er-y the eighth I em I em". Did you know that this song was originally recorded in 1911? The Herman's Hermits actually just sing the chorus, 3 times. This version features a slightly different guitar break. Check it out!

Cinema du jour, part 9
This is a recurring feature of YouTubeStars. I discuss some videos that were recently added to YouTube, or ones that I've just discovered. We'll watch two vlogs, hear a song and see an excellent YouTube tribute!
Unsystemagically Speaking
Michiko7, a woman from Germany, gives us her brilliant commentary on comments in this video blog. After showing off her "bendy" fingers, she explains, "a comment is something positive or something that helps you to improve." I agree! When commenting on YouTube, say what's on your mind but be respectful. Watch and learn!

First Blog/ Lucy in L.A.
By now, you may have seen LUCYinLA's "I Got a Callback" video which YouTube featured last week. 570 thousand people have viewed that one! But have you seen her first video blog? Lucy, 24, talks about her desire to be an actor and how that goal led her to L.A. Let's watch as Lucy introduces herself to us:

Ultimate YouTube Video
shedwa, a 23-year-old man from New York City named Shawn (his blog is here), uploaded an excellent YouTube tribute video last week. He starts off with a few short clips of YouTube in the news. Then we hear renetto from his "Who are you" video where he asks about the kind of people who are on YouTube. The rest of the video is a montage of tons of YouTubers, over the music of The Who singing "Who Are You?" Watch this video! You'll see plenty of familiar faces!

Terra Naomi plays the Troubadour. KwaiChi went to see Terra Naomi in London last week. Here is the report that he wrote for YouTubeStars:
It was the 1950's which saw the revival of London coffee houses as centres
of culture and civilization. Raffish, continental, revolutionary, these new
cafes became centres of rebellion and new music for the young and the young at
heart. Earl's Court, the wild western frontier of bohemian Chelsea, saw a
particular concentration of new establishments, and the most famous was the
Troubadour.
So famous, in fact, that whilst others fell by the wayside, the Troubadour
settled in to become a west London institution. Through the 50's and 60's this
was one of THE centres of London intellectual and artistic life. It's where
Private Eye was first produced and distributed; where the early Ban the Bomb
meetings were held (the precursor to CND); and where the Black Panthers met when
they left Paris after the '68 riots.
The Troubadour was the first place where Bob Dylan performed in London.
Paul Simon, Charlie Watts, Sammy Davis jnr and Jimi Hendrix have all played
here. Richard Harris fell in love with his wife Elizabeth here (she was doing
the washing up). Ken Russell recruited staff for his first shorts here, and it
was here that he became friends with Oliver Reed. Led Zeppelin used to come and
jam here after their Earl's Court gigs. Tom Robinson and Elvis Costello used to
play here too.
Last night was the time for a new star to take the stage of the
Troubadour, unknown by most of the crowd who were intrigued by the many devoted
fans sitting on the floor in front of the stage for better view (and for better
pictures). I was intrigued too; had these people come from watching the most
subscribed musical artist on Youtube? Had they come because of her own homepage
or on myspace? I had to know so whilst the small crew were setting up a large
keyboard and 2 guitars on stage, I prodded a few of them from my well placed
table near the stage and asked simply "Where did you hear about this gig?" The
responses received were a mix of fans from youtube and her own personal website
that people had stumbled across on the internet. Some of her fans had traveled
as far as Italy, some had rescheduled their flights back to the USA to see her 4
track promo for her new album and record label representatives sitting
discreetly at the back.
The hard rocking compeer for the night came to the stage and simply
introduced the star in mention as "A musical talent from New York, Terra Naomi".
A thunderous applause accompanied Terra to the stage as she started straight
away with an eclectic mix of vibrant sounds and outstanding vocals on her
keyboard moving swiftly through songs and instruments (Keyboard to guitars). A
hoard of people with highly spec'd cameras grew with every lyric sung as more
pictures and video were being taken. The crowd were appreciative of the
genuine talent they were blessed to witness in the intimate surroundings.
The 4 track show was over quickly, too quickly for many of Terra's many
devoted fans. Terra took some time out to speak to me and answer a few questions
I had before being swamped by an enlarged army of fans who wanted to have their
photo taken with her alongside autographed albums and adhoc pieces of paper. To
sum up my 60 second interview, Terra was visiting London for the first time and
had ventured around all the popular landmarks in between meeting with many
labels as she chooses her musical direction. Terra loved British gastropubs
where simple food is served elegantly as culinary delights in an environment of
old English tranquility. She felt her trip was all too short and she hopes to
revisit soon. That was all the time she had for me before being pulled away by
the Italian pilgrims for a photo.
As I write this Terra is packing her bags to go back to LA where she is
busy promoting her new album "Virtually" (available to buy on http://www.terranaomi.com/)
and touring virtually on youtube as well as the real world around LA.
