As part of YouTube's Five Year celebration, YouTube created a new channel named FiveYear. Today we will see videos from some of the early YouTubeStars as they talk about their years on YouTube.

Lonelygirl15

Jessica Rose played the part of Bree on the Lonelygirl15 channel. Originally, people thought she was just another vlogger making videos in her room and uploading them to YouTube. Soon it was revealed that there was a small production company behind the channel. LG15 became the Most Subscribed YouTube channel on the Top 100 Weekly Chart of September 18, 2006. Geriatric1927 had been number one. Before that, Brookers and FilthyWhore spent time at the top spot.

THANKS for all the nice comments! :) What can I say? Hmmm. My friend Daniel helped me set up this account and he helps me out with the videos (he's kinda a computer genius). I'm homeschooled so I guess that makes me a freak. Not! I don't care about a lot of the same things people talk about on YouTube but I'm trying to learn :) I do know about lots of random things (since I read ALOT)... so if you want to talk about quantum physics I just read "Surely You're Joking Mr. Feynman?" Peter Oakley is known on YouTube as Geriatric1927. He was 79 when he first uploaded to YouTube. His charming style soon won over the community and he became the Most Subscribed member in the fall of 2006. Peter is affectionately known as "The Internet Grandad."

Renetto

Paul Robinett is Renetto on YouTube. He started out in mid 2006 by doing "Renetto Reviews" videos. These were a series of funny commentaries on videos made by popular YouTubers, notably the highly subscribed LittleLoca. Paul used a goofy voice which was reminiscent of Bill Murry's "CaddyShack" character. We wore black thick-framed glasses, donned iPod earphones and stuck a toothpick in his upper lip to look like the part he was playing. Eventually he dropped the act and made many different kinds of videos, from comedy to vlogging to lifestreaming to community boosting. Paul still vlogs and can also be found on his site, Vloggerheads.

Wired Magazine has an article in their April 2010 edition about the fifth anniversary of YouTube, titled "The 5 secrets of YouTube's success." Here are a few facts from the article: 87% of ratings are 5 stars. Most discussed video is "10 questions that every intelligent Christian must answer" (Not anymore, now its this one. See our last post for more on religion videos.) Fred has a recently inked movie deal. What's the ultimate goal at YouTube? "We want you to go into passive mode, sit back, and watch." (Hmmm, what does that mean for the YouTube community?)


Okay, now let's watch some Music Videos!


I am really loving TiffanyJoAllen's latest video which is a beautiful cover of "Hallelujah"! Her guitar strumming is perfect and her voice is powerful. Tiffany adds her own style to this often covered tune and it came out great! Also watch "Lady Gaga - Paparazzi - Music Video Cover" which features Tiffany acting and singing a very professional version of this hit song. Tiffany says in the description, "I decided to do something a little different this time, and make a music video. I had a blast creating it. Please enjoy my 10+ hours of editing. Haha"



Here is a very well made music video for the new song, iCandi, by Whitney Raenan. The song is upbeat and fun and the acting and editing is very well done. You can buy it on iTunes; I did and I love it! This is our Featured Video this week on the YouTube Top 100 Weekly Chart. Enjoy!



Megan Nicole plays guitar and sings so sweetly in this nice cover of the hit song "Baby" by YouTubeStar Justin Beiber. I'm very impressed with Megan's singing - she even does the Ludacris rap perfectly. It's great! Megan made the video "Embedding disabled by request" so click the pic below to watch it on YouTube.



Talented UK singer Rebecca Shearing teams up with buddy Laurie McIntosh on guitar to sing a duet of their cool original song, "Julia". Watch, you'll love it! Also watch their AWESOME cover of "Rude Boy" by Rihanna.

Four unrelated videos for you all to view. Two from old time YouTubers and two from newer members...


Michelle Waugh is a talented 15 year old singer / songwriter. She sings and plays guitar in almost 50 uploaded videos. Most are covers but she also has some great originals. Listen to this cool song and also watch the excellent one I chose as this week's Featured Video over at our YouTube Top 100 Weekly Chart.





Kelsey Robinson is 17 years old and she loves music. She is a very good singer who makes music videos along with the occasional vlog like this one that I really enjoyed. She even made a very nice short comedy sketch about an incident in her math class. Also watch Kelsey's latest video from 2/25/2010 where she sings and plays piano on her nice original song called "Tanner", which starts at 1:34 after Kelsey catches us up on what she's been doing.





Paul Robinett has been uploading videos to his Renetto channel for 4 years as of March 5th. We have written about his insightful and entertaining videos many times over the years. Paul even joined up with vlogger Tom (tlg847) to make their own video site for vloggers called VloggerHeads. Check it out, its a thriving community that has been around since the summer of 2008. I wrote about its early days, here. Watch this short thought provoking blog about life and what drives us.





When I first came to YouTube 5 years ago, I was looking for Goth videos. I found two homemade videos that I liked (this one and this one) and then I started coming back to YouTube regularly. I soon found LittleLoca who was among the Most Subscribed at the time. We all later found out that this was a character played by Stevie Ryan. Stevie also created the "TheRealParis" channel and that is where this fun Goth music video is posted. Enjoy!

Livingpassion recently uploaded a video in which she recited an enjoyable original poem, as she has often done before. This time, PeriUrban decided to set the words to music! Livingpassion responds to his value-added video by covering Peri's song. She sings her lyrics to his tune, pretty cool!




UndiscoveredJulie is back with a skit featuring her character "Totally Claire." Claire will teach you how to be confident! Very funny and creative, watch and enjoy!




Artemisbell has made hundreds of cool dance videos. She plays a popular song and then films herself dancing with high energy to the beat. Always graceful and stylish, here is a recent dance from artemisbell. Be sure to also watch the animated tribute response video!




Juststircrazy is one of the great new vloggers on YouTube. But her vids are more than vlogs, they are creative mini-movies; well written, acted, filmed and edited. Don't get the idea that Juststircrazy is an actor, she is very real. Check out this video about what Dance is, in her opinion.

One of the best things about YouTube is that people who watch a video can respond to it in the comments and by a video response. This creates a conversation about the subject matter of the video. Often, the comment section adds so much to the understanding of an issue because a YouTuber can see different sides of the issue - different points of view. As long as people express their thoughts in a respectful way, this is a good thing! When commenters just spew hate in order to get a rise out of the video poster and the comment readers, it is best to ignore the commenter since they often leave these kinds of comments just to get attention - be it positive or negative. The human drive for social interaction is very strong, and YouTube can fulfill that need to some degree. Let's continue to do what we can to make YouTube a constructive community where it is possible to have an overall positive experience.

Here are four videos about interaction on YouTube. The first is a short bio from one of our favorite singers, in which she also discusses commenters. Next, we'll hear from one of the "wise men" of YouTube on the topic of what to do when certain people threaten others online. Then, we'll see a response video on the same topic, from a member of the former eNation. Finally, we'll have a look at a controversial video and the lively and heartfelt discussion that ensued in it's comments.

First, some news! I recently heard from Marina of the HotForWords channel about the importance of the "Total Video Views" stat. Apparently, people who want to get an idea of how well you're doing on YouTube are interested in knowing how many views all of your videos together have received. It seems that YouTube does not publish this piece of information anywhere. Marina asked if I could find that number for her. I created a widget that anyone can put on any of their websites (MySpace, Facebook, their own personal sites) which simply provides a YouTuber's Total Video Views number in text form. HotForWords is already using the widget on her website. The widget can be styled just like any other text - change the font, font size, colors - to whatever suits you. We created a website to support this new widget enterprise: www.MyYTStats.com. Please go there and see what we have so far. We have several versions of this Total Video Views text widget - one scrolls and one fades in and out. They are all available for YOUR use on YOUR websites, for FREE!



Our good friend Jennifer Newberry just launched a new channel dedicated to vlogs only. Jennifer is a 26 year old blond Swedish-American singer who we have posted about in the past. We even interviewed Jennifer back in December! This is the first video on Jennifer's new channel. Listen to her thoughts on "mean comments" and learn a little about who Jennifer really is. Then read the interview!



Tom, tlg847, pulls no punches as he discusses how threats to people and their families are handled in "life" and on YouTube and the Internet. He uses "bad language" to make his point. Is "it's only the Internet" a valid excuse for threatening and/or nasty behavior? Join in on the discussion by commenting or making a video response! Several interesting websites were mentioned in the comments. One is an ACLU page that talks about Civil Liberties in the "Summary of Argument" section. Another briefly describes the Avogato Trust Metric. Tom has been working with Renetto, PeriUrban and KenRG on a new website which Tom mentioned in this video and in the last video here. The final frames in that video tell us what the new website's name might be. This picture is from that video.



VitalFinds, an intelligent and prolific videoblogger who contributed to the eNation discussions and helped test the 2BuxMall, made a video response to Tom's video. She adds her ideas about what should and should not be acceptable in a well run video community website.



Last week, popular vlogger and artist Paperlilies made this video to announce her latest art competition. Bryony has done quite a lot to foster the art community on YouTube. She has painted several pictures on camera and auctioned them off on eBay. Tom, tlg847, bought one of the first ones. Bryony has sponsored other art competitions which gathered a good amount of participation and interest from the YouTube community. This time, her well known wit, sometimes veering into snarky territory, was deemed to be offensive to several members of the YouTube community. There have been almost 800 comments on the video so far, many on the topic of religion. Have a look and if you have an opinion, leave your comment!

As mentioned in our last post, the second San Franciso YouTube Gathering took place last weekend. There have been many videos uploaded that show what happened at the event. Here is a collection of some of the best videos of this YouTube Gathering.

First, an interesting new item. It has just been reported that Steve Chen, co-founder of YouTube, recently stated that live streaming video would be added to the list of featured offer by YouTube by the end of this year. Of course, these capability is already available to users of StickAm and LiveVideo. In fact, I watched parts of the live feed of the event on LiveVideo last weekend! I put up the link to this live feed in our last post; I hope you got a chance to check in and see what was happening! Live streaming video is just another reason to sign up with LiveVideo, even if you already have a YouTube account. Please click on the blue "Less Tube. More You!" ad in the upper left corner of this page to go to LiveVideo.

In one of the videos below, a new website is mentioned - TubeCloud. Go there and enter a YouTube channel name and it goes in the cloud. The more people that enter that channel, the bigger the tag in the cloud. Its basically a tag cloud of YouTubers. Click here to nominate my YouTube channel on TubeCloud. It's Super Tuesday! Who will be the Democrat candidate? Who will be the Republican candidate? I don't know! If you're looking for a political blog, this isn't it. If you're looking for interesting and entertaining videomakers and their videos, this is the place to find them! We've been bringing you recommendations on YouTubers and YouTube videos since June 2006. We have over 100 posts on this blog. We've talked about almost 200 videomakers. We've mentioned over 300 videos. Please Subscribe to Email Updates of this blog (Use the box on the left below the Links) so you can stay up to date with YouTube News and the latest and greatest YouTubeStars!

So what's up with YouTube? Is the video sharing service still the hottest thing online? Is it still gaining new users/viewers? According to this January 21st TV Week story, YouTube's traffic decreased for 2 weeks in a row in January. Now, this February 4th TV Week article reports this about YouTube, "For the week ending Jan. 27, the world’s biggest video site drew 30.7 million unique visitors, about on par with the week before..." It appears that the number of people visiting YouTube has plateaued. But if we look at the number of subscribers for the Top 100 Most Subscribed YouTube Channels, we can see that the number of subscribers keeps growing for almost all channels on the chart. How can this be? If the number of visitors is not increasing, then either the visitors who do visit YouTube include many who are signing up and subscribing to channels for the first time, or current YouTube members are subscribing to more and more channels over time. I know I fall into the second category. I didn't subscribe to many channels for the first several months of my YouTube life. But now, 18 months into my membership, I subscribe to 366 channels!

Is there a better site to share videos on? Well, last year at this time, everyone was singing the praises of LiveVideo. It seemed that everything that didn't work on YouTube worked very well on LiveVideo - and their videos were in stereo, an improvement over YouTube's mono sound. Many YouTubers created an account on LiveVideo and many still post videos to both sites. LiveVideo even has some very entertaining channels that are not on YouTube, such as blonde teen vlogger Alex and the one and only Captain James T. Kirk (now Denny Crane), William Shatner. But YouTube has fixed some of its problems and it still has a much larger community than any other video site. Even so, it is a very good idea to sign up with LiveVideo! Don't put all your video eggs in one basket, show your videos on YouTube AND LiveVideo. Please click on the "Less Tube. What's up with Renetto? Is he teaming up with partners to create a better YouTube? Check out his long and emotional half-hour video, "Take a wild guess who I TAGGED... " and also his vid on organizing the revolt. Let's see where this goes!

Randrigh is back too! I love Roxy's music and her little stories that often preceed her singing. Roxy has been having tough times in Japan and that has led to some powerful new original songs. In her own words,

I was thinking about how when people find something beautiful, like a flower, they feel the need to take it and make it their own, tearing it away from its home and putting it in a glass vase (killing it in the process) admiring it until it dies and then having to throw it out...what a tragic waste of beautiful life!

I figure if we really loved something we would simply let it be, rather than wanting to have it and killing it in the process...
so I guess this song is about learning to admire things that we find beautiful from a distance rather than rushing to possess it and killing it in the process... it's also my way of saying that life, in any shape or form, is too precious to let it go to waste, especially for selfish reasons...

TiffanyJoAllen is a rising YouTubeStar! As I mentioned above, she now has almost 9 thousand subscribers. Everyone loves her country versions of pop songs. But right now, lets watch Tiffany talk about a scary health issue she recently had to endure, due to her braces! Tiffany says,

Braces can make you very sick. Share this with your friends. Not being able to breathe is very scary and can be life threatening. I went
to so many doctors and had so much testing. I hope by telling my story I might save even one person from having to live this nightmare. Thankfully,I am well now since mine were removed. If you have questions please feel free to ask. I can share my experience but ultimately you will need to ask your doctor.

I've found four new videos for you all to see! One has quotes on Wisdom. One announces contest winners; I was one of them! One is a popular Morphing Kitty viddy, and the last is a philosophy video from a "cat".

First, let's have a look at this week's Top 100 chart. Our Featured video comes from Pippilly. She is an attractive lady with a great smile who has made 55 videos since she joined in March. This week, Pippilly became my 100th subscriber! I checked out her videos and subscribed to her in return.

The big news from this week's chart is the debut of Mememolly. Molly enters the chart at the number 95 spot after a gain of over 5 Thousand subscribers this week. The interest is due to her popular "are you anybody's favourite person?" video that we reported on just last week. YouTube featured the video the day after we wrote about it. The video now has almost 1.3 Million views, over 10 Thousand comments and over 200 Video Responses! Congrats, Molly!

The other "big thing" this week was the blow up and make up between Renetto and PeriUrban. Peri vented on Paul's recent videos and about their interaction concerning the WeTube / eNation project. Tom (tlg847), Mike (Argentium009) and Steph (livingpassion) commented by video as the conflict unfolded. Within a few days, they seemed to be satisfied with each other's video responses and now the matter seems to be resolved. This is a big win for the YouTube Community!

This time, we'll see a crazy Q & A video, a thoughtfully posed query with many responses, a celebrity parody and a vlog that recaps recent activity by a YouTubeStar. We're reported on Julie, Molly, Jodie and Paul before, but they continue to make excellent videos, so let's see what's new!

YouTube continues to attract viewers. Have a look at the Top 100 Chart on any given week and you'll see that almost all the YouTubers on the chart have gained subscribers over the previous week. People from all over the world (except for maybe Thailand and Turkey) continue to come to YouTube to watch music videos, laugh at crazy antics, or connect with others in this new face-driven medium. Chris Crocker is creating publicity for YouTube lately with his "Leave Britney Alone" video, which got him on the Jimmy Kimmel show and now has over 9 Million Views! Chris moved up 6 spots on the chart this week, to the number 15 spot by gaining over 11 Thousand new subscribers. I think that the YouTube newbies will find many other talented and entertaining people to watch, if they know where to look. I would invite them to subscribe to this blog (use the box in the left column) so they can be made aware of some excellent videomakers! UndiscoveredJulie is one of the best improv skitmakers on YouTube. Her videos are crazy but very entertaining! I believe that one reason for YouTube's popularity is the ease with which one can communicate with interesting people from all around the world. Mememolly has made a bunch of interesting videos - music videos, response videos and vlogs. In this film, she poses a thought provoking question, "Are you anyone's favorite person?" This struck a chord with YouTubers and they replied with almost 900 comments and over 70 response videos. Read more about Molly, here.

Brangelina Parody- "Adopt Me Too" Music Video

VenetianPrincess makes a music video! She sings of her desire to be adopted by Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. The song is cute; the video is funny and well edited. VP (Jodie) has a wide range of talents, as can be seen in her popular Princess videos and the amazing XBox mini-movie. Chris Crocker's plan to post his Suicide Video on YouTube

Renetto is undeniably a YouTubeStar. He has consistently been on in the Top 40 and has seen steady subscriber growth over the last year. Some of his films are over the top crazy, while others provide analysis and spark discussion about the YouTube community. In this rather long movie, Paul recaps some of what he has been talking about in recent vids and comments on the "What the Buck" and Chris Crocker recent runs at fame. Agree or disagree, Renetto often mentions topics in his videos that launch lengthy discussions in their comment sections. Dialog is a good thing!
