Lizzie McGuire Hilary Duff Chasing The Sun

Once Upon A Time, there was a girl named Lizzie McGuire. Lizzie was a teen girl who was sweet but shy and a little klutzy. She had a little brother she often fought with, named Matt. They lived a typical middle class American life along with their mom and dad, who just happened to look like that guy in Revenge of the Nerds. She had a Mexican-American BFF named Miranda and a boy best friend since they were babies named Gordo. This good girl and her nice friends and family got into funny situations with happy endings for three years - then they were gone.

Once Upon A Time, there was a girl named Hilary Duff. She was born and raised in Texas where she took acting, singing and dance classes with her older sister Haylie. Disney found her and made her a teen idol in a very popular show about a sweet, shy, clumsy girl and her friends and family. Hilary also had a successful singing career, with hits like "So Yesterday," and "Our Lips Are Sealed" with sister Haylie. Hilary continued in the public eye in several movie and TV roles. She has never really been gone, but she was less visible as she did other things in her life including starting a clothes line, writing a trilogy, taking up charitable causes, marrying, having a son and separating.

Look who's back with the one of the most watched videos on YouTube last week! It's Lizzie McGuire! I mean, it's Hilary Duff! Hilary has a new song called "Chasing the Sun" from her fifth album. The song and video were released on June 29th, and the video already has 15 Million views! This is a catchy summer tune with a funny music video in which cubicle worker Hilary daydreams about fun in the sun while things go wrong in the office. Check out this great summer video hit!

I thought the music video was well done and humorous, but there is also a Bloopers video! Have a laugh when things go wrong in the shooting of the Hilary Duff music video "Chasing the Sun".

Christmas Song and Dance

One week to Christmas, are you ready??? Take a few minutes out of your hectic day and watch some YouTube Christmas videos! They are sure to put a smile on your face. :)

First, let's have a look at this week's Most Subscribed Chart. In positions 1 through 20, JamesNintendo Nerd, WhatTheBuckShow, AshleyTisdale (Ashley Tisdale is an actress from Disney's Nigh School Musical), and DaxFlame have all moved up one spot. WilliamSled, LinkinParkTV (videos by Linkin Park rock band), and GayGod all fell back one spot.

Big movers this week include SonyBMG, up 5 to number 60, and MondoMedia, up 6 to number 53. New to the chart this week are comic PatCondell at the number 89 spot, and UK vlogger charlieissocoollike debuting at number 98. LonelyGirl15, long at the number one spot, hangs on to the number 4 position even after months of slight drops in subscribers each week. Have a look at LonelyGirl15's Subscriber History. With a negative trend like that, LG15 will soon trade places with HappySlip or maybe even KevJumba or MiaARose who all continue to add subscribers steadily.

Now, on to the Christmas videos! We'll see two singing videos and two dancing videos by some of the nicest ladies on YouTube! Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!

Jennifer Newberry Interview

Jennifer Newberry headshot
It's been a while since we've interviewed a YouTube member. But we're going to do interviews regularly now, starting with this discussion with the beautiful and talented singer - Jennifer Newberry. Jennifer's YouTube channel is jennifernew21. She is a young woman with blond hair and stunning blue eyes who was born in Alabama, grew up in her mother's home country of Sweden, spent some time in New York City, and now lives in Seattle Washington. Jennfer currently has 64 videos on her channel, most are music videos of R&B cover songs. There are also videos of Jen's original songs. She has written, co-written and produced over 35 songs so far.

Now, here is our interview with Jennifer Newberry.

Hi, Jennifer! Thanks for agreeing to this interview. You have a great voice! How long have you been singing?
As long as I can remember, my mother was a singer so I was always around music. I performed the first time when I was 5 years old, it was at one of my mother's performances.

Who is your favorite singer?
My favorite singer is the female Swedish singer "Robyn" she has a deep meaning to her music and I love the way she sings. Christina Aguilera is also one of my favorite artists.

How did you first hear about YouTube?
Through a friend of a friend. He thought that it could help my career to become a successful singer/performer.

What made you decide to put videos up on YouTube?
When I knew that it was a way to be creative and to show people and let them know who I am. I'm not banking on YT to make my career but I am at least trying to channel my music.

What's the best thing you've put up, do you think?
hmm, I'm not sure. I'm very critical of my own stuff but if I have to choose I really love the video "New York New York I'm gonna have To Say Goodbye" because there are some fun footage of my last week living in NY and it's special to have as a visual memory.

You have become a very popular singer on YouTube. Could you please comment on why you think you are so popular and how you feel about it?
I'm not sure to be honest, I think that the songs have a lot to do with it. If it's a song that a lot of people like, it gets more hits and if they happened to like what they hear, they subscribe. :)

How have your friends and family reacted to your videos?
My family and friends are really supportive of my videos. In the beginning, I had a few videos where I used some bad language but I cleaned up and try to set a good example now.

How do you like working with other videomakers, like Wouter Hamel and Jeff Williams, and do you plan to do more collaborations in the future?
The Wounter Hamel was really exciting. I have gotten messages from people that have seen the video on MTV all the way over in the Netherlands. How cool is that! It's allot of fun to collaborate with people and I will diffidently do it in the future I have some projects going on right now actually so we'll see how that turns out.

Are you on any other websites besides YouTube?
Yes I am. First of all, I have my own official website jennifernewberry.com then of course myspace.com/jennifernewberry. I also have a page where I sell my music on cdbaby.com/jenmusic/cd and a page where I promote my music sellaband.com/jennifernewberry

Jennifer Newberry on SellaBand

What else do you like to do in your free time, besides making videos?
Like to be lazy and watch TV, listen to music, walk my dog.. you know normal stuff *smile*

If you could do it all over again, is there anything about your experiences with YouTube that you would change?
Not really, everything has a learning process and it's necessary to go through them to be able to better your self.

What are your plans for the future?
I would like to record another album so I'm working on some new music. :)

School's Out!

School's out for Summer! You worked hard at your studies, now it's time to enjoy life for a while. I have a feeling that we're about to see a surge in new YouTube videos, as people use their free time to watch and create movies. For maximum exposure, post your cool new Summer videos on both YouTube AND LiveVideo! Go join LiveVideo by clicking on that blue ad at the top of the left column.

We'll start the fun this week with a video that has a "School's Out" theme. Then we'll watch a 14-year-old female singer/yodeler sing a song that won her a world championship. Next up, we'll see Day One in a new singing series that celebrates Classic Rock. We'll end with a mystery/controversy; something to think about now that school is done hogging all of your brain cells!

Summer Is Almost Here!!

Now that the semester is over, it's time to head home and enjoy the friends and family that you've missed during the school year. Katiwren27 has made a short video about just that! Kati calls this a pointless video, but I think it is representative of the excitement that many students are feeling these days. Be sure to also watch Kati's "56 Things I Learned" in college and see if you agree or disagree with each of her "things".

If you can't see the video above, watch it on YouTube.

Tiffany Jo's MIND BLOWING YODELING!!!

I can't watch this video without a huge grin spreading across my face! Young miss TiffanyJoAllen is only 14, but she has full-grown talent. She has been singing since she was 9, so she is young but not a novice. Watch her yodel her little heart out in this video filmed at the 2007 Tucson Folk Festival. You'll see why she is an International Yodeling Champion!

day one of rock week!

Here's a fun idea! Pick a bunch of your favorite songs and sing along. Everyone does it, but not everyone films it! Mrspassic decided to do just that, and she invites everyone to do the same in response videos. Sarah starts her Classic Rock video list off with a tribute to Aerosmith as she sings along to "Don't Wanna Miss a Thing". She really connects with the emotion of this song; watch and see! Then, make your own singing video - hey, why not, School's Out and you have plenty of free time now!

Smoking, Tobacco Industry and Youtube

Is the Tobacco Industry paying people to make YouTube videos that portray Smoking in a postive light? Usmedstudent, a first year medical student, thinks that they just might be! He thinks that the Tobacco Industry is engaging in Buzz Marketing, a deceptive form of advertising because the people making the vids appear to be "real" people. Are the Pro-Smoking videomakers "real" people just expressing their enjoyment of Smoking, or are they "fakes" who are paid to market concepts and products? Watch the video and express your opinions in the comments. The debate has already begun between usmedstudent and vesperae, a woman who interacts "with others in the Smoking Fetish Community," in this video's comments. What are YOUR thoughts on this???

Songs, and a songster's comedy

In this post, I'll show you three music videos. The first is from a marvelous singer who sings to purchased backing tracks. The other two are from singer/songwriters with guitars. We'll end this post with a funny but insightful comedy sketch from one of the best and most popular musicians on YouTube.

First, let's have a look at this week's YouTube Top 100 Weekly Chart. There's only one switch in positions in the Top 20 and not much movement in the rest of the chart, either! Is this the calm before the storm? Will there be a wave of new videomakers climbing the charts in the coming months, as many YouTubers begin their summer vacation? We'll just have to wait and see! There is one big mover, communitychannel. Natalie jumped up 36 positions with her 4204 new subscribers this week, to land at the Number 61 spot! Check her out!

The 2BuxMall, a place to make your own Store where you can promote or sell things, went online for testing this week. So far, there are 8 test Stores open. Many of the links on the Store pages are live; visit some of the Stores and see for yourself! For more on the 2BuxMall, see the FAQ and Blog.

Every Little Star

Oh my! YsabellaBrave keeps making the best singing videos on YouTube! This time, MaryAnne sings an early 60s hit originally sung by Linda Scott. (Actually, the words and music were written by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II for the 1932 Broadway musical "Music In The Air") The song also appeared in David Lynch's enigmatic movie, "Mulholland Drive". This video is cuteness to the max! Have a look...

Shine Your Light

Here's a nice song from a singer/songwriter who goes under the YouTube name of eatmorecookies. I'm doing that right now and have to be careful not to get any crumbs in the keyboard! This Nashville man has uploaded 20 videos in the month that he has been a member. They all feature him accompanying his singing with his guitar playing. This video is eatmorecookies' newest addition. It was recorded in one take with no editing. The chord changes are enjoyable and his singing is very good. Check out this uplifting video!

Dear Ovaries (original)

As they used to say on Monty Python, "and now for something completely different..." Here is a song by singer/songwriter StitchedElf - and even she admits "...it's weird...". I think its a creative music video by a young lady with a very nice voice. Gina has uploaded 12 videos; some are originals and some are covers. They are all quite good! Watch this video here, then click over to YouTube to read the lyrics. They're pretty unique!

No-One Makes Videos Any More....

Leprechauns are real! There's one in this video, and he's a pretty good psychologist! This funny yet insightful video from popular singer/songwriter Periurban looks into the thoughts and feelings that people may have as they progress through their videomaking career. Watch as Peri converses with his inner self about the ups and downs of YouTube popularity.

Cinema du jour 19 - Singers with Guitars

This is part 19 in our continuing series, Cinema du jour, the movie of the day. Home made music videos have always been popular on YouTube. The first huge success in this genre came with Terra Naomi's great song, "Say It's Possible". Recently, Miaarose has become an overnight sensation. In this post, we'll watch four music videos from four different YouTubers who play their guitars and sing their own songs.

Before we get to the videos, I want to invite you to read about the YouTubeMall project. This will be a free service that allows all videomakers to create Stores to advertise what they have for sale. Many videomakers have PayPal Donate buttons, or CafePress Stores, or sell CDs or paintings. You will be able to advertise all of this, and more! The idea is to have one central place for all videomakers to list their projects/items for sale. But what if you don't have anything to sell? We'll have that covered too! You will be able to be paid for viewing rights to exclusive videos that you post to the site. There will me more on this in the coming weeks...

Is This Love?

Creativefisher is one of my favorite YouTube singer/songwriters. She has a captivating voice that she uses to bring her moving lyrics to life. But Char is much more than an aspiring musician. She is a talented artist, and this aspect of her personality adds depth and emotional texture to her videos. Watch this one, which was featured by YouTube, but be sure to also check out the four new videos she uploaded last week!

If you can't see the video above, watch it on YouTube.

Leave me alone by Jesse Stutsman

Here's a cool music video from stealurface1976. Jesse is a Canadian man who plays acoustic guitar and sings to original songs and covers. He has done classic rock covers from Tull to Tucker and even The Beatles. In this video, we'll hear Jesse sing an indie inspired original rocker that really caught my attention. I think it's a great song!

If you can't see the video above, watch it on YouTube.

KRIS SHRED - I'm Broken V2 (Original)

The last time I wrote about KrisShred, it was for his "Insane Nonsense Song" which was later "covered" by lipsyncer extraordinaire, celestialsam. That song is still stuck in my head! But Kris has done many other music videos, including a powerful cover of The Doors "Crystal Ship" 60s classic. Today, we'll watch him sing an original song that I recently discovered and loved! Ignore the headphone clamped to his head which he used as a mic (lol!), and enjoy this rocker!

If you can't see the video above, watch it on YouTube.

Angels (song)

Periurban is one of the most popular singer/songwriters on YouTube. He has made over 150 videos and has over 3000 subscribers. Peri, a Scottsman, was the winner of Renetto's "How to become popular overnight" contest. That might have helped him get some viewers, but I think they would have found this talented and personable man in time, even without this publicity. You can watch Peri sing and discuss videomaking on YouTube or at LiveVideo. Here's a song he did in December. Click on the description to read the excellent lyrics!

If you can't see the video above, watch it on YouTube.

Please read our last Cinema du jour, number 18 - it's here! That post mentions Renetto, Kratzlaff, iChannel and KwaiChi.
