Monster! How should I feel?
Nine summers ago, sisters Meg and Dia Frampton released a video for their song "Monster" which would come to have over 2 million views in time. This alt rock tune is full of guitars and pounding drum beats, but it was the sweet pouty words of the chorus that would become immortal in the dubstep dance community:
Monster! How should I feel? Creatures lie here; looking through the window!
In the video, there is much jumping around, as someone's living room gets totally trashed! Watch and bang your head!
Three years ago, the Nightcore community got a hold of Monster! Nightcore music is the manipulation of an original song which speeds it up about 25%. The result is a chipmunk sound effect and it increases the calories burned as you dance to it! This version was always on the playlist this summer at the worlds best parties! Now its the Fall but it's still in my head! Monster! How should I feel? Not tired yet!

Maddie Ziegler, Age 12, 1 Billion Views!
She has been on the Ellen Show, Dancing With The Stars, Saturday Night Live and The Grammys. YouTube videos featuring her have over 1 Billion combined views. She is 12 years old! This is Maddie Zeigler.
Maddie won't become a teen until this September but she already is famous. Living in the Pittsburgh PA area, Maddie spends hours every day in a dance studio practicing her craft. She has appeared on the Lifetime reality show, Dance Moms, which led to her being cast as the sole performer in the video for Sia's hit song Chandelier. This video has about 650 Million views since it was released last May. It features Maddie and Maddie alone, dancing in a beige leotard and sporting a sharply cropped shoulder length platinum wig with bangs or a fringe as those in the UK call it. Quite amazing dance moves and dramatic facial expressions, which have captured the viewer's attention, here is why!
Sia is an Australian singer who turns 40 this year. Sia Kate Isobelle Furler has been active in the music business since the 90s. She has become very successful, and is in the list of the 100 wealthiest Australians. She has chosen not to show her face in some performances as she would rather not have her personal life affected by her fame. In the recently televised Grammy Awards, she sung with her back to the audience while Kristen Wiig from Saturday Night Live and Maddie Zeigler danced. Sia's desire to not be seen as much has led to Maddie Zeigler being chosen to be the sole performer in 2 or 3 recent Sia videos.
The one video where Maddie is not alone is the video for Elastic Heart by Sia, which also features Shia LaBeouf who was the male lead in the Transformers and many other movies. Maddie and Shia are cage fighting in leotards in this video! They appear in a round cage similar to a huge bird cage, and perform dance/fight moves. Maddie Ziegler is playing the part of a werewolf, and is required to bare her teeth and punch and bite Shia. This video became controversial but further highlights Maddie Ziegler's proficient dance moves. Check this video out! It currently has about 220 Million views since its January debut.
Just 3 days ago, the Sia / Maddie Ziegler trilogy concluded with this third video featuring Maddie in the same outfit. In this video, she is not dancing, but simply gesturing wildly with her arms and hands while making hughly emotional facial expressions. The song is Big Girls Cry by Sia. It starts with Maddie moving her hands around her face but soon turns sinister with another set of hands on her, which then lift her up off the ground! What do you think of this rather intense performance? Watch and see; it already is approaching 10 Million views in just a few days!
Add up the numbers. In just these three videos, Maddie Ziegler has about 880 Million views and counting. Maddie appears in many other videos including her Grammy appearance and episode of the Ellen Show. Check them out here. Maddie Ziegler is bringing new life and excitement to the dance world, and she is only 12 years old! We salute this talented young lady!

What I Like About You - Then and Now
One of the coolest dance tunes of the 80s is back on the radio! "What I Like About You" was originally recorded by The Romantics, and has been recently covered by Five Seconds Of Summer. Here are both videos along with some trivia about the song!
The Romantics are a Rock / New Wave band from Detroit. They called themselves The Romantics because they started the band on Valentine's Day. Although this song became a staple of dance clubs in the 80's, it was recorded as a single in 1979. The lead singer of this song is the band's drummer, which is quite rare. Although the song is strongly guitar driven with massive power chords, the middle break features a harmonica, much like early Beatles songs like Love Me Do. Although some think the lyrics are "Keep on whispering in my ear" the actual lyrics are "Phone whispering in my ear". Before that, the words are, "Tell me I'm the only one, wanna come over tonight." She is not with him at the time, she is telling him this on the phone, apparently in a whisper. Further evidence appears in a very similar sounding song from the same album - The Romantics self titled first album. This other song is titled, "When I Look In Your Eyes" (video here) in which we find the lyrics, "When I get you alone, its so much different from the telephone" at the 1:34 mark.
Here is the official video for What I Like About You, on TheRomanticsVEVO channel. Get up and dance!
What I Like About You was huge at Rock Dance Clubs but never a big radio hit when it came out in the US. However, it went to #2 on the charts in Australia. Now, the Australian band Five Seconds Of Summer has covered the song What I Like About You, and it is a fairly big hit on the radio. The band, also known as 5SOS, is in competition with One Direction for young fans, especially girls, but they rock a bit harder than One Direction. 5SOS sing the lyric "Keep on whispering in my ear" which is incorrect as stated above. But it is not uncommon to change some lyrics when covering a song.
Check out the new pop rock version of The Romantics classic dance rock hit. Listen for the different lyric and the middle guitar break. Dance dance dance!

Fun Dance Workout - Hey Sexy Lady!
It's almost time for the Holidays! What happens to most of us during the Holidays? We eat too much! We just finished with Halloween so we may have eaten a ton of candy. Next comes Thanksgiving and that is usually a gorge fest. The end of the year is more of the same, as we visit with family and friends. What can we do to stay slim, healthy and in the best shape possible?
Dance Workout!
Watch Heather Vaughn on her JellyBeanNose YouTube channel as she gives a fun tutorial on how to do a workout dance to Psy's huge hit, Gangnam Style. Heather, 23 years old and from Chandler Arizona, is a talented dancer who makes dance cover videos as well as random videos about Korean and Japanese things, kind of what we saw from Miss Hannah Minx.

Here's how to learn this dance workout! First, watch the first part, where Heather talks you through the moves to do during the chorus of the song. Then practice those moves throughout the entire song. Finally, for advanced dancers or workout people, do the rest of the moves that Heather does! Soon you'll be that Sexy Lady or Dude!
Of course the real key to being sexy is to feel confident about yourself and to project that confidence. Wherever you are in life, take stock of the good things in your life, and give thanks for what you have. If you decide to improve any area of your life, set a goal and make a plan. Do research - use YouTube as a source of instruction and motivation. Never compare yourself to others, but strive to be the best you can be. Love yourself as you are and move forward!
Happy Holidays to all our readers! Our visit count is approaching 1.5 Million and we would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who reads YouTubeStars, comments and shares the posts on Social Media. You all rock!

Taylor Swift Shake It Off Outtakes
Taylor Swift did an ad for Keds shoes and the picture to the left is from that ad. Click the pic for more about Keds at Amazon.
The Animators
This video shows the filming of the video that features dancers known as Animators. Animation is a subclass of popping which is a jerky style of dance made up of many quick motions followed by poses. The animator variant is named in reference to stop motion animation popular in the days before computer graphics in adventure and monster movies.
The video starts with Taylor Swift in the most sparkly outfit she has ever worn and a wig so tight that it is giving her a headache. The purpose of the segment is the same as the purpose of the entire video. The idea being put forth is that there will always be others who have something to say about you or who are trying to do things to you. But Taylor Swift's advice is to ignore them, shake it off, and do you own thing. Make the moves up as you go, and totally enjoy yourself! This is not a new point of view. Shakespeare wrote in Hamlet, "Nothing is either good or bad, but thinking makes it so." It's not what happens to you, its how you react -- how you handle it, how you process it, what you do in response.
Taylor Swift finds herself among a trained and practiced group of expert Animator dancers. They execute mind blowing moves flawlessly. Taylor knows that these dancers are very controlled and precise, while all she is capable of is spastic motions. How will she handle this? She performs utterly adorkable dance moves based on whatever pops into her mind! She has this music in her mind saying it's gonna be alright. She may not be as good an Animator as the rest, but she is confident and knows she has other unique abilities, so she enjoys herself and that radiates and lights up the stage! She knows she is awkwardly ruining the great performance of the others but she is proud of her moves just like they are proud of theirs. Have a look and enjoy the Animators, and Taylor Swift doing her own dance moves! This 4 minute video already has 1.5 million views and it a must see for fans of Taylor Swift and fans of the song Shake It Off.
Outtake video #1 was the Cheerleader section. Taylor says that sometimes you feel like you don't fit in. But sometimes you can get everything you want in life without ever feeling like you fit in. The most important thing in life is to dance to the beat of your own drum and to look like you're having more fun than the cool kids! Taylor Swift prepared for the shoot by running to build up her cardio endurance. She had to do three straight days of jumping around! Watch Taylor and the other girls shake their pom poms and do various cheerleader moves including a basket toss where Taylor is caught by three guys; this is one fun video! It is nearly 4 minutes and has nearly 3 million views.

Dance For Me - Dancing With The Teens
Egor has a very close relationship with his mom and they visit often via Skype, but still miss each other, although Angelika expresses it more, as can be expected. His father is a Russian soldier and Egor considers him his role model. Egor tries to be strong like his dad, and lively and artistic like his mom, all while transitioning from boyhood to manhood while living in another country wth another family and juggling the time demands of school and dance practice.
Mie is somewhat like Egor's mom, in that she expresses her feelings openly. Egor is more reserved and keeps things to himself. Together they try to find the best way to compete and win in several tournaments, and they do have great success. These two different people come together in difficult circumstances to blend steadfast dedication and long hours of practice with passion for their joyful movements as they assume their roles as dance partners.
I highly recommend this documentary to anyone of any age, especially for fans of Dancing With The Stars. You will gain an appreciation for what it takes to become a champion at your craft. Although the setting of the movie is dance competition, the relationship of the real life characters will draw you in and have you rooting for them to succeed on and off the dance floor! Remember, this is a documentary about real people, the best form of reality television. Watch the trailer, below. Then watch the full film at PBS until August 20th. Or purchase the film at Amazon.com using the link to the left. For more information on the film and the teen dancers, check out the PBS site for this excellent documentary, and see who each dancer is dancing for.

Happy in Iran
It might be a crime to be Happy in Iran. Six people made a video of themselves dancing to the hit song Happy by Pharrell Williams, uploaded to YouTube two days ago. Yesterday they were arrested. Today they are out on bail. This happened in Tehran, Iran. Here is their video:
Here is a video supposedly showing the people in the video being questioned by Police:
Here is the description from this second video:
Clarification: In this video, the Iranian State broadcasters refer to the individuals being interviewed as "actors". The individuals who participated in the "Happy" video are ordinary young people and not necessarily actors.
A few weeks after the release of the video, Happy (We are from Tehran), a remake of Pharrell William's song, "Happy", these young Iranians were arrested by police. A few hours after their arrest, they appeared on Iran's National TV, even before charges were made against them. Posted by Poletik, hosted by Kambiz Hosseini.
Parrell Williams had this reaction on Twitter:
It's beyond sad these kids were arrested for trying to spread happiness http://t.co/XV1VAAJeYI
— Pharrell Williams (@Pharrell) May 21, 2014
The President of Iran tweeted this on Twitter:
"#Happiness is our people's right. We shouldn't be too hard on behaviors caused by joy." 29/6/2013

Lyn reviews 50s and 60s Sights and Sounds
Guest blogger Lyn Price is back with her second YouTubeStars post! Lyn is a talented singer who is here to review a Garage Rock Music Video from the 1960s, a movie about the 60s and a TV show from the 50s! Read what Lyn says about the Garage Rock song Stop And Listen, the Dirty Dancing movie and the Honeymooners TV show.
Classic Sights and Sounds!
THE SHAG - Stop And Listen - 60s Garage Rock song!
This is a powerhouse of a garage track written and performed by a band from Milwaukee, Wisconsin called at first Shags, then Shag.
The band consisted of 4 musicians. They began performing folk and blues music. However, they became eager to move on when they heard the music of the Rolling Stones and other rock bands of that era. Shag performed their own material and were known for wearing outlandish costumes. They also used special effects After playing parties, schools and small clubs, they moved on and in 1967 they were signed by Capitol Records. They recorded "Stop and Listen" on Capitol.
This track is one of the fist anti-drug rock songs to be recorded. In 1969 they appeared at the Midwest Rock Festival in Milwaukee which featured a number of known musicians.
Shag split up in 1971. But in the 1990's and later, "Stop and Listen" was included on several CD compilations of 60's Garage Band Recordings. On "Boulders" they are featured in Volume I and "Highs in the Mid-Sixties volume 10.
Becoming more current, in 2005, the bands 1969 recordings were released on Gear Fab Records. It's no surprise that the track called "Stop and Listen" has made many rock music lovers do just that.
1960's inspired movie DIRTY DANCING achieves spectacular success
The soundtrack to this film gave a 1960's flair since it is supposed to take place in the Summer of 1963, where the summer wind, the carefree days of ice pops and rock n roll bring people to the hotel for family and friends and activities. One such activity offered is dancing lessons (like Mambo). One of the guests (Jennifer Grey) falls for the dancing instructor (Patrick Swayze) and they begin a relationship.
The film was made in 1987 with a limited 5 million dollar budget. So here was this low budget film with no major stars except Broadway legend/TV star Jerry Orbach in a supportive role. It's the Summer of 1963 and the scene is a Catskill Mountain hotel. Actually it was filmed in Lake Lure, North Carolina and Mountain Lake. The weather turned out to be very hot and sticky and a portion of the cast passed out after 20 minutes of filming. Then the weather became very cold. Conditions were not that great and to complicate matters, the film was on a tight schedule - two weeks for rehearsals and 44 days for filming.
Dirty Dancing was based on the childhood/teen years of one of the screenwriters. The next step was finding backing, financial and promotion. They did their rounds and after hearing "no" finally found the company that liked the idea.
The soundtrack really moves this film - "Be My BAby" by the Ronettes, "Big Girls Don't Cry" by Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, "Do You Love Me" by the Contours, "In the Still of the Night" by the Five Satins, "Hey Baby by Bruce Channel, "Hungry Eyes" by Eric Carmen and more. In the "final dance" scene, the song (I've had) The Time of My Life, a great dance number that became very popular and won both the Golden Globe and an Academy Award for best original song. Also, a Grammy was won for best duet. The "Dirty Dancing" soundtrack generated two multi platinum albums and multiple singles. This was the first film to sell more than a million copies on home video.
On YouTube, "Dirty Dancing" has well over 250 million hits. The music carries the story with the drama that takes place at the mountain hotel. The two stars of the movie, Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swazye, had worked together on other films and had trouble relating to each other. The screenwriter had a brilliant idea. She suggested "parties" that go on after the daily filming, this way the actors began to "feel their roles". Everything fell into place. After the movie was released, a stage version was popular in Australia, Europe and North America.
I think the dancing AND the music brought this film it's great everlasting success. Many who watch the film once, will watch it again and again.
Mama Loves Mambo - The Honeymooners
I always loved this show. It opens with a theme song and a beautiful picture of Brooklyn nights, complete with nostalgic brownstones, stars and a full moon. The show is meant to be funny - Jackie Gleason plays a NYC bus driver. He & his wife Alice Kramden live in a run down Brooklyn apartment house but have many friends, a few live in the same building. Alice occasionally works but basically is a stay at home wife. Despite the financially squeezed characters, there is glamour and artistic beauty in the basic story, the episodes and the background. There is jazz music, a new tenant gives the neighbors Mombo lessons in the Kramden apartment, and there is mention of the "Hong Kong Gardens" where Alice likes to go dancing and have Chinese food. The Kramden's apartment faces the back of a Chinese restaurant. The comedy was and still is loved by many. People who weren't born when the show was airing have found it to be interesting in a lot of different ways.
To keep the show going, Jackie Gleason sometimes did hour long specials or sketches until 1978. At one point, CBS network worked with the Honeymooners & Jackie Gleason. Though there were some changes, the show remains strong in the USA. Viewers find it refreshingly humorous and nostalgic.

Gangnam Style YouTube Videos
You've seen it on YouTube, you've seen it on the Evening News, now see it on YouTubeStars! Its time for some Gangnam Style videos! This K-Pop dance song from Korean pop star PSY is approaching 300 Million Views on YouTube. It reminds me of a generic LMFAO song, some kind of cross between Party Rock Anthem and I'm Sexy And I Know It. The video features lots of dancing with plenty of hip swirling and "Ride 'em Cowboy" motions. Random is the key word here; you never know what will appear in the next scene. There is a guy thrusting above a man on the floor in an elevator. There's PSY on the toilet. There's dancing in the streets, as expected, but also party bus action.
Here's the official Gangnam Style video, bt PSY. Watch it and learn the dance. You'll be a hit at the next wedding you attend. :P
A video like this was bound to spawn a thousand variations and parodies. There is this Western parody, where they are ready to whip some ass, Gangnam Style. There are several girls in bikinis dancing on the beach which probably accounts for more of the 3 Million views than the cheesy fight scenes. Erica Law is the girl in the white bikini.
Of course there is a sped up version of the Gangnam Style song! There always is. Someone, or typically several someones, do a chipmuck version of pop songs. This one is pretty cool, and the song actually rocks harder at a faster tempo. The dance moves are there from the original, as well as the funnier random scenes. Due to the rev up, the video clocks in under 2 minutes, which may be fine for those tired of the tune already! Pretty girls and goofy situations make for a nice parody with nearly a million views.
What are people saying about this video? Like any pop tune, the reaction is all over the place. Love, hate, amusement, SMH, and W/E. The Fine Brothers make a series of "Teens React" videos. Here is their take on Gangnam Style. This cross section of teens watch the video then answer questions posed to them by the behind-the-scenes narrator. Rapid but interesting analysis from the target demographic. Watch and see which people in this video you agree with.

New to the chart this week are comic PatCondell at the number 89 spot, and UK vlogger charlieissocoollike debuting at number 98. LonelyGirl15, long at the number one spot, hangs on to the number 4 position even after months of slight drops in subscribers each week. Have a look at LonelyGirl15's Subscriber History. Embedding disabled by request
I would like to tell you about two talented female videomakers. Normally, I'd embed some of their videos in this post. However, both ladies have decided to set their videos to "Embedding disabled by request." So, I'll just tell you about these entertaining women and give links to their videos on YouTube.
But first, The NEWS. There is not much movement this week in the top 50 of the Top 100 Weekly Chart. But there are some nice movers in the bottom 50. MarieDigby, LazyLionProductions and Mememolly all made nice moves on the 41-60 page. Wowhobbs, a World Of Warcraft channel, moved up 8 to the number 88 slot.
The once mighty Lonelygirl15 channel has been losing subscribers lately. According to the Subscriber History for lonelygirl15, we see that the channel has been losing subscribers since it peaked at 101,357 on 9/23/2007. Will current number 1, Smosh, fall from the top like Lonelygirl15, Brookers, FilthyWhore and Geriatric1927 all have? If we look at the number of subscribers they have versus number two, universalmusicgroup, it doesn't appear that they will leave the top spot any time soon.
Recently, we reported on the YouTube community's reaction to the fact that Oprah is on YouTube. Since then, there has been one more video of note on the Oprah "Hullabaloo" from popular videomaker Boh3m3. Please have a look at his thoughts on the matter, in his video titled An Apology / All the Hullabaloo (language warning!)
Artemisbell
A few weeks back, I was visiting with my young niece and nephew and something in the conversation caused me to begin singing the chorus of a song that I had not heard in years! I did not remember who sang the song, but I did know it contained the phrase "Love and Desire." So I searched for these words on YouTube and found a video that used the song as a backing track. The video portrayed a woman having a wonderful time dancing to the tune.
The woman in the video is Diana, an artist living in Arizona. She has made over 180 videos, almost all show her dancing to songs from the 60s through today. The first words on her profile sum up her attitude: "Have Fun...Do what you want to do...even if you're criticized." Diana certainly has fun making her dance videos! I also enjoyed her dancing to New Order's Blue Monday, Billy Idol's White Wedding and Madonna's 12 inch version of Burning Up. For more on Diana and her art, please visit her website.
Bicycleconnoisseur
I'm not sure how I first came across this very intelligent and charming young lady. I do know that the first video of hers that I saw was titled amerenglish. Lydia, living in the UK, discusses something that always interests me, the differences between British English and American English. I was struck by the level of presentation by someone of this age. Lydia is 15 and explains in her explanation video that she has been "technically labeled as gifted since I was about three." She is not saying this to boast, but it is clearly true as seen in this video!
Please also watch Lydia's commercial break, a cool faux advert for a Casio keyboard. And don't miss her question and answer video series, starting with Part I. Click here to see a list of all of Lydia's entertaining videos.
